I just woke up today(and decided to actually count my hair strands that come out). I have just woke up about 20 minutes ago and i finger-combed my hair as gently as i could and every time i ran my fingers through my hair atleast 2 or 3 hairstrands would come out, then i as gently as i could combed my hair with a comb and found out with every time i combed my hair about 3-5 peices of hair would come out as well. If anyone is experiencing the same problems, or if anyone can tell me what i can do about this any help would be appreciated, i have just started growing my hair and i would do ANYTHING to be able to grow it long even 2 inches below midback which is what i want.
Thank You
-Oleg-
Don't worry. It is normal for most to lose about 100 (average) hairs daily. Meanwhile, new ones will be growing. The cyle is never ending. It happens to us all.
Most interesting is that I myself used to lose 100+ daily when my hair was shorter. Now that my hair is past mid-back all has slowed down to a point of loss greatly, like about no more than 10 as I finger-comb only. And, anything that is lost is l o n g!
Of course, some fall out on their own. Just ask my Vacumn Cleaner. LOL
well that's a relief. i have about 6 months progress and my hair is about 3 inches long. but i don't think i lose as many hairs...on average i think i lose no more than 40 hairs when i brush (and i don't brush everyday lol). and maybe 20-30 hairs when i comb.
Yeah that's about how much i lose....i guess it's normal then, i thought i had some sort of "mal-nutrition" problem or something like that. And about the hair...i read that the longer the hair grows the stronger the ruths become, which means you lose less hair when you grow it out longer.
Thanks for the help guys
I once read that the longer the hair grows, the less hair you loose. I think that the reason why this happens is because the hair shaft gets stronger as it has to suport more lenght. My sister, who is a waist lenght long haired, only looses 1 single strand of hair, if brushed very gently. Maybe this is the reason why you notice a diference in your shedding =)
Hair strands lost per day drops drastically with length. Your hair follicles get stronger with the added weight of longer hair. If we ALL lost 100 hairs per day, very few would reach a terminal over 16 2/3"! (This assumes 100,000 hairs and losing 1/1000 of your hair per day. A hair strand would only live for 1000 days. At a growth rate of 1/60" per day that is 16 2/3".)
Don't worry if you lose 100 hairs per day if your hair is only 2 or 3 inches long. The rate of loss will drop with added length.
Absalom
I have passed the four-year mark and I am losing far fewer hairs
then when I was a 'short hair.'
That all makes sense. So the longer i grow my hair the less i will shed because of the added weight of the extra length which will strengthen the hair follicies and roots.
It would be interesting to find my terminal length.
I do believe you are correct Absalom and remember reading of this from you quite a long time ago on the Hyperboard.
I know I had said about 10 lost hairs per day by finger combing, but I was giving the "high side" of normal finger-combing loss. Just this AM only one was lost, and the usual is usually no more than 1-3. However, the "high side loss" happens when I am in a hurry and don't finger-comb slow enough.
Luckily, the vacumn still operates fine, but a bunch of long hairs are always evident having fallen-out without my even being aware of it. But really, so far (all considered) it really isn't all that much.
Thanks for adding what you did about this.
Justin
Don't worry about lossing hair, it is normal =) Think that your new hairs will be the ones that in some time will touch your mid-back. I myself was really paranoid about my hair shedding and now I got used to it =) Good luck on your journey =)
3 - 4 'pieces' (hope you mean strands) is nothing.
I could make a kitten with what I shed in one week and my hair is thicker
than ever. Relax...enjoy...stop worrying and...
...your goals will all come true for you.
Good Luck!
Hello Everybody,
I am now 46 going on 47 this april. I have been growing my hair since 1975 if we use today's standard for what we call long hair. Before 1975, my authoritarian mom wanted me to have only crewcuts in the name of "common sense". In december 1974, even my barber told me crewcuts dont look good on me, and gave me a trim. By march1975, my hair covered my ears, and got a trim, but the barber did not touch my ears, just one of two centimeters above my eyes, and the collar. Those trims continued about every three months, and each time I came home from the barber, my mom bitched about him not cutting enough, but did not make much of a case about it.
In 1976 I decided to let it grow even longer, past the shoulders. I loved it, however I did notice that I shed lots of hair in the bath each time I washed my hair. I was nervous, and wondering if eventually I would go bald like my uncle on my father's side. (My father left and I was raised by a single-parent mom). It was by doing some research that I learned that it is normal to lose up to 160 hairs a day. The number fluctuates, since there are times when one sheds more hair than other, which happens around May or June. I even counted every hair I lost in the tub, and it varied from about 40 a day, and went as high as about 120 but did not occure for long.
Despite the hair falling in the tub, today, because, of some favorable genetics on my mom's side (My uncle Pierre still has a full head of hair and he is in his eighties), my hairline is receding a bit, but at the time, nothing to worry about.
Have a nice day,
Georges
George, you have a great hairline for your age and your hair is magnificent. Honestly, you don't look to be half the age you claim!
I see everyone talking about losing so many strands of hair per day...
It seemed like I used to lose alot (not that much, but alot to me) a year or so ago.
I swear, now I think I lose like 5-10 strands a day. And that's just from brushing it in the morning and combing it after a shower. I'll consider myself lucky...
Oh, and my hair is a bit past my shoulders, a few inches from my nipples. Fairly long I suppose.
