Okay...so I used a straightening iron (with ceramic plates cause i hear theyre better) and the end result was pretty good. I even got a few compliments at work. I wont do this often though because i assume the heat will damage and deform hair so ill only use it when my hair gets really unmanageable. But on to something else.
At work today, one of my coworkers complimented me on my hair and then looked at it up close. She said that i have dead ends and that if i was thinking of growing my hair out they would have to be trimmed off so that it would grow faster. Naturally, I didnt like the idea of trimming because it would mean i would have to wait longer to grow out my hair. And also, i thought to myself, what do the ends have to do with the roots, which is where hair grows; and what difference could trimming do to hair growth? So, i ask the experts who have gone thru this before. Should i trim off the dead ends to help it grow faster? Will it help, or will i be left with more months to wait?
Ignore this yarn - it is nonsense to say that removing what ever dead ends are (or live ones for that matter) will make hair grow any faster.
Hi GreekGuy,
there is NO interaction between the hair tips and roots. Trimming makes NO SENSE AT ALL. Biologically, the whole hair is a dead protein strand - except for the root. Trimming would be a set-back. It means that it'll take longer to gain the desired length. - If your ends feel dry, just use a good conditioner and don't use shampoo every time (every fifth or sixth time is plenty).
You can always post a close-up photo if you want comments on your hair structure.
If "GreekGuy" means that you are from Greece, out of curiosity, may I ask whether Orthodox priests - still or again - wear their hair (and beard) long (and, of course, avoid trims)?
Happy growth!

I am first generation Greek-American. My parents are immigrants, though u can barely detect an accent on my mother and my dad talks as if he just got off the boat (he's been here 30 years...lol).
I havent been to church in a very long while(i have reservations about religions that request money to be members and also greece has a big problem with the whole church and state separation; but thats a different story). But as to how the priests wear their hair; I know they definitely have long beards but they wear some sort of head garment and i cant tell how long their scalp hair is.
My mother also perpeptuates this wive's tale, but as others here have said from time to time, hair is considered to be dead protein once it emerges from the root. It has no "connection" with the root that would allow it to tell the root to speed up production just because the end had been trimmed. So it makes absolutely no difference what you physically do to your hair (such as cutting it), it will not affect the speed at which it grows.
Diet may affect the quality of what emerges from your scalp, and some argue it may affect the speed of growth (though speed is largely thought to be fixed regardless of what you do), but hair has no facility to repair itself. It just has to be taken care of.

You only need to get a trim if your split-ends are so bad that you are being cursed with tangles, knots and really poor condition hair.
Apart from that , as everyone else has also stated, it basically a load of crap, a false claim, and is not scientifically correct, just an old wives' tale.
Everyone has different opinions. Most say, dont cut it and let it grow, but I differ. I go to my hair stylist every 3-4 months and have her just "snip" the ends. My hair looks exactly the same in length, but it looks much more healthier and fuller after the "snip trim" It gets rid of the dry and split ends
don't do it - believe me - i know it !
i got 5+ 'trims' wihthin my 3 years of grow and it doesnt let your hair grow faster, it doesn't look nicer - it only tooks away length and makes the time longer to get longer hair ...
i also was told that trimming hair every 6 weeks make your hair grow faster and that it look nicer after i have cut it ... i looked in the mirror and there was - in my op - nearly no difference - but i lost 1-2 cm each 'trim' ...
i have very fine hair (inherited from my mum - my dad would have the better hair :) and so i trusted the people when saying that ...
but after i found that page i haven't done it anymore ...
don't trim it - give it time - and don't give too much on the opinion of other people (it's either envy or unknowledge) ...
greez & keep it growin',
