I have been wearing a pony quite abit lately and i'm actually starting to adopt it as a good alternative to having hair out.
My mum has to do it for me. When i attempt it ,the tail is always to far from the neck and it looks like this moth ball on the back of my head ,lol. Also, i struggle to get it very tight and secure on my own. My mum does it nice and tight and fits all the hair inside. I then use a bit of hairspray or gel to keep 'baby hair' around the earlobes downand keep it in place all day.
I have practised repeatedly but am still not self-sufficient in tying my own tails. Hopefully with a few extra inches i will be able to do it easily on my own. Probably still a little short.
I think straight hair is better suited for ponytails but i think as my hair gets longer it will stop looking like a ball at the back of my head and start looking like real long hair( like the dudes i see with mid back curls, yeah!).
I find if I start from the top, as if I'm tying a half-ponytail, but then pull everything into place, it works better. I do like wearing my hair quite high on my head though.
A tip: don't use hairspray. Certainly not that 'Cossack' stuff.
I used it maybe twice a week for a couple of months and even though I always combed it out at night, it definitely increased frizz and caused the hair to act strangely, and on a long-term basis.
Since I stopped it's gradually improved.
You're having pony probs? Hmm. I'm lucky I don't, because my mom doesn't WANT to do them for me? :P She's not exactly a fan, or even a casual admirer of long hair on guys.
For me, I just bugged my mom over and over last July to take me to my aunt's salon so I could buy ponytail ties (hardly had air to put in a tail back then, but tied-back addiction was in the air). I ended up with some gelled-back high ponytail style and 10 mins worth of detailed tying instructions. Now, about 7 months later, I can fianlly do my own stuff :P. I'm such a fast learner, lol. Kidding.
I think your prob is one I only solved a few weeks ago: putting the tie in the tail of hair itself, as opposed to behind it or more or less touching the back of the head. When you grab the hair to be tailed (and make sure you grab all of it! I've had curls that were long enough to fit in but somehow never made it into the tail and looked really messy), ensure you get all the hair through the tie. With curly hair, it can be harder to get the tail through the tie, but it looks a lot cleaner if you do. After that, the second loop around should be a lot easier.
HTH, dude.
Er, take out the second question mark. Dunno what I was thinking there.
I suppose i just gotta keep practising. Thanks for the advice.
Well, I usually brush all my hair back and then try to gently grab all of it.. while holding the hair tie. I'll usually brush the sides last before actually putting the tie in, then I don't have stray hairs from the sides. =P
I use the kind of thicker ties, so I only have to wrap it around twice.. doesn't seem to damage my hair or anything and it stays in place easily. It makes it kind of wavy though, hehe.
I guess it was easy for me to figure out how to tie it back. Then again, I've always wanted to grow my hair out since I was pretty young. I must be a natural or something.
Why not put up a few pony tail pics to see what the tail looks like?
I have. If you click on my avator it will take you to my website that has some ponytail pics there.
Hahahaha Shame on You lol
My bangs BARELY fit into a low ponytail. I've found that parting my hair down the middle, putting all the hair behind my ears, and lightly wetting the top (while smoothing it) makes for the easiest, most efficient approach. I use either leave in conditioner (Infusion) or simply H2O for this...otherwise, I have too many "flyaways" to make it presentable in my work environment.
When I first started tying it back for work I also used alcohol free melting gel to tame the top and sides, but now I just accept a bit of a mess on the sides in lieu of gelled, slick looking hair.
It works really easily if you lie on your bed or couch right after a shower and let your head hangover the edge and tie from there
this way gravity can help
