My situation is as follows.
My girlfriend and I, who are very serious, have discussed my desire for long hair. She is supportive of the result-meaning not her preference by any means, but sees that its important to me, so she is being supportive. Anyhow, my hair is still short, but the "back seems to be growing faster than the front" according to her, and it is slowly starting to look "mullet-like".
By the end point of my journey, I would like to be able to tail my hair relatively low on my head. My max length i want is shoulders or a few inches past (if thats even long enough to tail)
She has asked me to trim the back as I grow the hair out to keep it looking nice through the growing process. "Please cut the back and let the rest catch up so it doesn't look weird"
So my question is this: Since I want to tail it eventually, will trimming the back be that much of a big deal as I grow it out? Especially considering I WOULD ASSUME that the hair doesnt need to be as long in back as on top to tail it. PLEASE correct my assumption if it isn't correct. I would just hate to trim the back as I go to keep it even and neat, get to a point where the top is long enough to tail and then the back isnt :(
Please respond ye loyal fellows!
Trimming = set back = will take you longer to achieve long hair.
You should just leave your hair alone for a minimum of 2 years and let it all grow one length without trims or layering.
Wierd? If don't understand why it will look wierd.
Don't worry, it won't look like a mullet as your hair at the front is getting longer, and besides, mullets are cool.
It takes about 1-1.5 years to get a descent tail going, that's without trims. If you do decide to trim the hair in the back, you will still be able to get a tail , it just won't be as long as it should be.
Hi
I doubt your hair is actually growing faster at the back - its just an illusion. Until all the hair grows to a length where this isn't noticeable, the hair will always appear longer at the back because of where the hairline is. I've had the same problem, especially as my hairline is very low at the back.
Maybe as far as your relationship is concerned, a small trim might be a good compromise, but I'm sure if you just waited a little longer you wouldn't regret it.
Hey now -
I started growing in June, 2004. I trimmed the sides shorter once and the back twice to keep it neater for work as it grew out. I wish I had not, but it is too late...
I haven't touched the back in about a year now, and it is finally long enough to look decent in a tail (albeit a short, 6-7 inch tail). My biggest regret is that it looks very close to a bob cut when I wear it down, though, so I will be trimming the top and sides in 5-6 months to make it look more natural.
Like I said, I regret it now but it gave me enough confidence to continue growing while in a professional work environment. Good luck.
The hairline is lower in the back than it is in front, and that's why the hair in back looks longer (that and, for a few people, the hair in back really does grow a little faster).
I had the same problem when I was growing out in the early stages, and had the back cut a little to let the front catch up. I think it made it look a lot better, myself.
Don't trim if >you< don't want to though. I think hair does look better when the back's been "evened-up" a bit with the front, myself, but it's your decision.
Ello good sir who got me into the great works of Claudio. ^.^ I know exactly what your girlfriend is thinking about the mullet look bit. I devised a system that both keeps your hair as long as possible and avoids mullet-ness. Here she is:
1: You will reach a point in going through the awkward stage where it begins to look a bit mullet-like, this is where you get the first back trim.
2: The next trim you will get will be to catch the back up with the sides. You will want your hair to be about 2 inches below the ear on the sides. Try to get the 1st trim at half the time between when you begin your growing out process and when you do this 2nd one.
3: The last and final trim you should get will be to even up the bangs with the back and sides. Your bangs should be about shoulder length when you do this.
Your hair should be long enough for a pony when the bangs are about 1-3 inches below your chin. If you just keep the bottom of the back cut and not above that, there should be no pony problems. PEACE- Katamah
Difficult question to put into words. but i'll try. When your bangs are long enough to put into a tail, lets say 2 inches past the chin, and your hair is even all the way around becuase you cut it to be that way so when it's down its pretty even, litterally how long is the hair on the back of the head. Sorry for cunfusion, although I have gained insight from all the reponses.
PS. Coheed and Cambria live in Cleveland may 13th. Rock on Claudio!
My hair in the back is perhaps only an inch or two longer than my bangs (which hang down approx. 2" below my ching, maybe a bit longer).
Anyway, my tail in back is fairly short - about 5-6" if stretched straight. If the back was completely even in the front, I would say the tail would only be 2-3".
Hope that helps.
