Hello
Has anyone in here ever had Ringworm of the scalp? about 4 years ago i noticed a small patch on the back of my scalp and when i touched it i can feel small stubbles, then another patch appeared on the left side of my head right near my ear. I've had these for four to five years on and off sometimes they will heal and sometimes the hair will break again and the pathces will appear. I went to the doctors back in 2003 and he was not sure what it was at that time so he gave me some anti fungal cream but when i read the back of the package it said not for use on scalp so i never used it, after that i began to take some trivita B-6 and B-12 and the small patches dissapeared.but now i have the small patch by my ear back again. im just wondering can this spread into bigger spots and cause complete baldness?? i mean i had these same patches for years and it does not look like their growing any bigger.
Sounds like it might be eczema. Try some hydrocortizone cream on it and see if it lessens any. If so, go back to the Dr. and tell your findings.
I had some weird quarter-sized bald spot on my scalp last year. I tried some anti-fungal medication to no help. However a lotion my doctor later prescribed (forgot which one! may be antifungal) for a few weeks seemed to work, and the bald spot disappeared. I don't recall that the medication said 'not for use on scalp' though.
Hi Bill,
it's hard to make a good diagnose over the internet, but IF it is ringworm (and that could easily be the correct diagnose), THEN steroids (including cortisone ointments etc) will do more harm than good.
The two most likely fungi would be microsporum or trichophyton (one of them, interestingly, is called "trichophyton tonsurans"). Microsporum sometimes causes a fluorescence of the hair shaft in ultraviolet light, but trichophyton does not fluoresce. The treatment consists of tablets for four weeks to three months (if terfinabine is used, sometimes two, rather than four weeks might be sufficient).
By all means, see a dermatologist or an infectious diseases specialist and have them do appropriate tests for fungi. Vitamins may be a good idea anyway, but IF the correct diagnose is "ringworm", they won't solve the problem.
Hope that helps.
Hans-Uwe
