Hi, this is my first post here hopefully of many. I've been growing my hair now for just over a year and it's looking long now. Just recently I've become a bit bored with it and I want to change the style a bit but I'm not sure I'll be doing the right thing. (Sorry for the big links of the pics).
At the moment it's sort of layered like this:

I'm okay with this except my sides (almost at my shoulders) stick out massively. I know that they will probably decide to drop eventually but I'm wondering if there's something else I can do.
I'm thinking of changing my style to this:

Now, if I were to have the hair on the back and sides cut to the same length as the hair on the top, and then grow it all down, would I have so much of an awkward stage? I'm just thinking that if the sides were blended into the straight hair from the top that they might go like that too and be more managable. Do you think that would work?

It kinda makes it hard when you post pics of other people and not yourself.
Avoid layering your hair. It will just take longer to grow out and so you will be stuck in the awkward stage even longer and will probably end up shaving your head because you will become dissolusioned and upset with your hair.
There is no easy way out, sorry, you just gotta tough it out through these stages. Good luck.

First of all, if your hair is looking like the first picture, than you still do not have enough lenght to make it looks like in the second picture. Now I think that when you start changing your hair from short to long you should mark a goal before starting to style. If I were you I would wait for my hair to grow untouched to a certain lenght and then style it has desired. Or, in the other hand, if you prefer to grow your hair longer than long ( oh well...) you will have a bunch of other styles such as braids, buns, tons of ponytails... Now the choice is yours, but don't cut untill you're sure you've done with growing, and 'till you think you have enough lenght...
