hiya,
don't u think it may be better to deny remote linking to this site from other sites ?
so we can prevent a) misuse of the posted pics here and b) saving bandwidth (and therefore money for the webmaster) ...
for example i visited a shorthair forum, where a person directly linked to the pic of wishmaster with stupid comments ...
so they misuse the pic without permission AND they cause traffic to THIS website !!
only a thought from me :)
greez,

It's no longer practical because some browsers nowadays do not follow the standards in reporting the referrer variable. For many users this is now an adjustable feature, generally presented to them as a "security feature". Most of them have no idea it is being switched off by some general security setting, nor do they know how to switch it back on.
The users of those browsers would not be able to see our photos even when here, if we required a valid referrer variable be present. We have a general policy of not implementing changes if they might cause the site to not work for any of our regular users.
I'll add that denying linking does not really stop people, since once they've noticed you are doing that, they'll just download the photos to their own computers and then put them in their messages from there.
Oh, by the way, what does "greez" mean? I've never heard of that word.

oh i thought that is only a feature of opera (where it is on by default) ...
had no clue that it's standart at the "default" browsers to be turned off ...
you are right - the misuse will continue but at least not on YOUR cost ...
but due to the disabled referrer variable in the newer browsers it's useless to implement that ...
a self-created short form of "greetings" :)
Yeah I think it's a great idea, wouldn't know how to go about doing it though. I use firefox and have very high security settings... dunno how websites work that stuff though.
i found a code that can keep people from direct-linking images. but i'm not sure if the administration would have to use it, or the person supplying the images. so this is available to whoever can use it:
http://www.lissaexplains.com/html6.shtml#direct
and people with Photobucket, there is also a way to keep people from direct-linking your images. if you select "private" and then select a "guest password" then that should keep people from being to directly linking your images... but it wont necessarily stop them from seeing it.
That is basically the code we'd use, and we could do that, but it would not refuse to show photos for some people, and that would be confusing. We prefer not to confuse people, especially since Victor now has no bandwidth concerns with his new account and there's no motive on that score.
