Is there a trick in getting the ponytail to look right? Do you guys brush it a certain way first? Gel or hairspray?
Bit of water, comb front and sides back, grab the ball, then tie it up. I use both but mostly hairspray cause it keeps the hair in place better.
There's no real trick. If your front hair is too short to fit in the pony and you want a brushed-back pony, some gel or hairspray is the best thing to hold it in place after gently brushing back the shorter hairs. If your hair is a bit damp, it'll help the brushing back.
If your leaving the center-part, just put the shorter hairs behind your ears and tie back the rest. If some still can't fit, you might want to gel/spray/brush them back along the sides to get it to look right, but it's really a bit silly to me to go to so much trouble to make a pony before all the hair, or at least all except the bangs, can fit.
If you mean when all your hair can fit in, though, I don't know. You just pull it back if it's center-parted, or brush the top hairs back if you want a brush-back pony. The only art to it is tying the tail without getting any hair stuck in the tie itself, if you know what I mean. It's more of a problem with curly hair.
A tail should look progressively better as your hair gets longer.
