Ive always wanted a ponytail, now finally all the obstacles to growing one are gone, however, currently have a short conservative business type haircut. How do i get my hair cut periodicaly so that as i grow my ponytail i dont look like a wildman?
Just don't cut it. Things will even out in time.
You're probably a lot better off just letting your hair grow until it gets to the length you want, and then getting it tidied up if necessary. Trimming it while you're growing it will probably make it look neater, but it will also slow down the whole process a lot.
Try getting a flexicomb - they pull your hair back into a neat look quite easily, and don't require too much hair to work with.
Don't cut it. That will only slow down the process, while vastly speeding up your boss' agitation at your "wild" hair. Use gel to slick it back if you like, but try to look for non-alcoholic gel. It's less drying on your hair, and excessively dry hair can indeed look untidy.
You don't. Every time you get a haircut the whole purpose of all will be defeated. Just let all grow on its own and avoid any and all cuts, trims, even-outs and prunnings for a couple of years.
He is asking for advice on how to trim. Not everyone is only concerned with growing as fast as possible. He wants tips on how to trim his hair to look neat and continue growth. Perhaps having to wait an extra 6 months because of getting periodic trims is worth it to him.
Every time someone asks for advice about "how to trim" people respond with "don't do it" and thats not helpful guys.
If someone asks "should I trim" thats a different story. This person has made up their mind that neatness is more important than quick growth, or so I assume.
Does anyone have any actual tips on trimming procedures or style tips to maintain a conservative look while the goorwing process continues??

Seeing that this is a long hair site , extremely long lengths(.ie waist length) is very desirable and periodic trimming is an all round no-no(not splits). This is the view of most of us here, including myself.
The way i see it is that you have to have all or nothing. You either tough it out, grow it long, get thru the akward phase and you will come out with awesome hair in 2 years or more.
If you want to start getting periodic trims to keep it looking 'neat' and to keep the boss happy then it ain't gonna work and you will never have long hair. You can't grow hair if you are gonna start trimming it, its a blatant contradiction.
Keep the Boss happy Got to be Kinding My Boss Sucks !
Firstly, let me remind you this isn't an argument :)
secondly. If someone grows for 3 months and then trims a half inch every 3 months. Thats 1 inch every 3 months as opposed to every 2 months. That might be a worthwhile compromise to some people, and it is clearly a doable thing to get trims and grow out. It just takes longer, it doesnt cancel itself out.
Taking it at 2/3's pace is worth not getting your boss PISSED at you potentially, if thats the case. Or how about in sales, you gotta look the part, you cant look awkward lol. Sometimes neatness is more important than speed of growing.
Forogt this statement... All or nothing might be your opinion, but if someone asks for triming tips, that probably not their opinion, and to say something like "If you want to start getting periodic trims to keep it looking 'neat' and to keep the boss happy then it ain't gonna work and you will never have long hair." thats so clearly incorrect.
Trimming slows it down, it doesnt make it impossible.
I want long hair very much, but I might get trims along the way to keep it neat myself. Everyone talks here of how other people sometimes aren't accepting of our hair choices, but then some people o this board aren't accepting of fellow board members choices about their hair. That's kind of silly. It makes me not even want to ask for any tips on trimming because 8 people just spam that "doing it is wrong and wont help and etc. etc." If I can't ask on this board, from people who understand hair about trims, I am out of luck, because no one else understands.
So where do we who want long hair go if we also see the need for trims? This is a long hair board right? Not just a "long hair if you do it our way" board I hope.

Rome -
I hear ya' - check my reply above. I am in a professional environment and 32...it was not easy growing my hair out, and I took advantage of trimming. It took longer and I don't 100% enjoy the look of it down (which I will fix this summer), but it now fits in a tail is free to go as long as I want.
Trims suck, but are necessary for some of us. Worked for me.
Nothing is always ever anything. Something is always anything, but nothing is never always something.
I'll give it a shot.
I started growing in June, 2004. I trimmed the sides shorter once and the back twice to keep it neater for work as it grew out. I wish I had not, but it is too late...
I haven't touched the back in about a year now, and it is finally long enough to look decent in a tail (albeit a short, 6-7 inch tail). My biggest regret is that it looks very close to a bob cut when I wear it down, though, so I will be trimming the top and sides in 5-6 months to make it look more natural.
Like I said, I regret it now but it gave me enough confidence to continue growing while in a professional work environment. Good luck.
What is a bob-cut? lol
Maybe I have the wrong nomenclature(?) A "bob" to me is when the ends are cut blunt to the same length all around...the top is longer than the sides, the front is longer than the back, etc. In other words, all hairs end in the same spot.
Mine is not quite that bad, but the back is only a few inches below the bangs and curls, therefore it appears to be this way.
Thats seems an Impossiable task to achieve however Ill give you permission to E-mail me when you have found the Answers to your Questions meanwhile I bid you Good Luck in accomplishing your dreams of having haircuts & long hair at the same time !
Best Of Luck

Simple... don't cut it. Some people find the natural different in length between the front and back to be ugly, and cut it accordingly; however I strongly disagree with this. Don't worry about a "mullet"-like appearance. This is a common thing people worry about, but trust me, it's not a mullet. The only time you should trim it is if your hair becomes too tangly, in which case you should trim the split ends.
The reason the hair in the back appears longer is because the hair follicles are much lower, hence creating the illusion that the hair varies in length. Technically, though, all of your hair is the same length.
