Hi new here, hope to b a regular too :p my hair is barely 3 inches long but hopefully that'll change in a few months :) anyway, i haven't really used conditioner before since i've never had my hair longer than 2 inches usually, so I went to the store and picked up some fructis shampoo and conditioner of the same brand (not the 2-in-1 stuff) and uhh I accidentally got the color resist stuff too (my hair isn't colored, so I dunno how screwed up my hair will be from that, should I just go get the regular one?) Anyway, i was surfing around and i found some reviews for the same conditioner....it says it produces silicone buildup or something :/ I'm not familiar with the results of that but I'm assuming its not a good thing and from the reviews a few people seemed to have cut their hair as a result of it...i was wondering is this really gonna be a problem with this brand (to anyone familiar with it) cuz my gf really like the fructis smell and I wanna try to grow my hair without cutting it for a while.
thanks!
note - GF=Garnier Fructicus
Well i don't know how reliable those 'reviews' are that you mentioned. Personally, i love GF and it is really good stuff for my hair and very affordable for the average consumer. I have tried many different conditioners and GF surpases every other brand. Most dudes on this board also love GF. How could you buy the wrong type for your hair? If you haven't opened the bottle take it back to the store and get an exchange. If not , i wouldn't worry too much, it is conditioner afterall. I use the "sleek and shine" for dry hair. Yeah, i love the smell too, i could almost drink the stuff :)
About product buildup- many products, including GF, have silicones in them. Silicones are like a protective layer which coat your hair and do not easily rinse away with water. They are designed to keep your follicies lubricated and smooth. However, if you don't rinse thoroughly you may get build-up which will make you hair even dryer since the silicones are shielding off any additional nourishment to the strands, like a protective coating. Does that make sense?
Simply rinse well and use a good shampoo to clean your hair every couple of days. You couldl also use apple cider vinegar to remove build up, although i have never done this before. It isn't a problem for me.
I read about people using GF and would like to try some myself, but no one sells GF here... just Garnier hair dyes, Garnier skin care whatever. However I have not noticed any difference between shampoo, except maybe a few hours after washing. I do notice a difference between head and shoulder and other non dandruff shampoo though, one less dandruff, the other more dandruff. I dont know I guess my hair is hard to damage (except hair dyes... they do bad things to your hair!!!) Last time I dyed my hair (which involves using 12% hydrogen peroxide) it felt like barbie doll hair... I didnt like it, but it was short then, if it were as long as I have it now it would have been a nightmare to comb and groom.
I think from now on hair dye should be called hair DIE!
The Fructis line is awsome. I've been using it for a year now and I refuse to go back to anything else. Then again, I'm one of those rare people that has no choice but to shampoo every day. I cant use conditioner. I have an overly active scalp when it comes to oil and if I dont shampoo each day it looks like it has been washed in several days. So I cant really say much on their conditioner's. I can tell you this. If your hair is only about 3" right now, then dont spend the extra 2-3 bucks. Stick with a cheaper brand until the next 3-6 months go by. The fructis line does it's best work on hair that is 5 or more inches long. 3-4 inches just doesnt get tangled up near as much and that is exactly what fructis prevents. So save a few doaalars now and wait it out.
Hello Ned,
I think the Fructis conditioners are some of the best. Even against higher end brands (Matrix, Aveda, Kerastase, etc), Fructis is still a favorite of mine. The two formulas I like most are Long+Strong and Fortifying for Dry and Damaged Hair.
Lots of conditioners contain silicones and I've never had a problem with build up when I was washing my hair normally (that is to say washing it with shampoo and then putting on a conditioner). When I was doing conditioner only washing, I did get silicone buildup. At first my hair was very soft and sleek, but after a week+ of doing COwashing everyday, it became TOO SLEEK. The build up took out a lot of volume and my hair wasn't quite as shiny. It looked and felt clean, but it was pretty limp.
I washed my hair with a clarifying shampoo and everything went back to normal. If you get too much silicone or whatever in your hair you can always shampoo it out, right?
Ned:I accidentally got the color resist stuff too (my hair isn't colored, so I dunno how screwed up my hair will be from that, should I just go get the regular one?)
Is that the conditioner for colored treated/permed hair? Conditioners for colored or permed hair are normally just a rich conditioner designed to improve hair damaged from coloring and perming. Some conditioners for colored hair have UV filters or claim to prevent fading or the pulling out of color. Anyone can use them, though.
