I saw a father and 2 sons come into the store I work at today the father was in his mid to late 30's the sons were about 7 and 10, the sons each had long blond hair just past mid back the father had a long tail dard blond hair down to his waist but he was bald on the top of his head all of his tail came from the sides and back of head. I guess the boys never had much of their hair cut, I was helping the older boy pick out a baseball glove so I asked him about his long hair, how long was he growing it, " he said he did not know he always had his hair that long", I guess when you are small as you grow so does your hair. The boy said " he wanted short hair like his friend because it gets in the way when he plays ball." I told him it looked good and do as your Dad does put it in a tail. The father just smiled. I said to him the girls is going to go nuts over your hair in a few years so take good care of the hair you have now. The fathers smile got even bigger. I hope to see this family again to see if the boys get hair cut, I hope not.
Funny story. It is not often that you see a longhaired family like that. It's a rare species , lol. Kids that age are usually too young and underdeveloped to have a mind of their own and individuality in their dress and appearance(i only started consciously being aware of my dress/hair/image when i was maybe 15 years old). It is clear that the father is a major influence in them having long hair. He loves long hair so lets his kids grow their hair too. The kids sound neutral about their hair for they have known it all their life, they take it for granted and have grown acustomed to it.
That's coincidental. I was at a race in Waycross last night and I saw a father (30's) and son (16-17), and both of them had long (middle back), blond, really straight hair. I didn't talk to them, just spotted them out of the corner of my eye, but they looked so similar they had to be father and son.
Parents tend to have a lot of influence on kids' hair. If the father has long hair there is a good chance the sons will too, but there are certain factors acting against that. Firstly, guys with long hair are more broad minded, so if the son wants a different (shorter) hairstyle from their father, the chances are dad will just accept it. This is generally not true of short haired fathers whose sons want long hair. Secondly, there are some (not me) who think it is asking a child too much to expect them to deal with pressure from other people to cut their hair, so they keep their sons' hair short. Personally, I think it is character building, but if they want it short, that's OK too.
My wife and I both have long hair, and in general we let our children choose their own hairstyles, although my wife insists they have regular trims and that they have fringes (called 'bangs' in American for some unknown reason). Our daughter decided she wanted her hair cut back to shoulder length, instantly regretted it and is growing it again. Our son, OTOH, wanted short spiky hair when he was 8, and only started growing it out again recently (he is 12). We made them wait before getting new styles, but then we let them have the styles they wanted.
