Hi guys I'm new here.
I just wanted to say that I'm going to start growing my hair out. I grew it for almost a year once but I cut it. I was working (I work in retail) and people would always come up to me and say "Ma'am" or sometimes they'd call me "ma'am" right to my face. I got sick of it so I cut my hair.
I'm gay (proably irrelevant, I know)
I'm a 24 year old black male.
I want to grow a little shorter than shoulder length. I want it to be straight, shiny and flowing.
I just don't know how my parents or the public will react to it.
Check the pic of lenny kravitz. That is my goal.
Hi Billy,
Welcome to the board.
I think you'll feel better about growing your hair the next time - just add a mustache, or - better perhaps - a goatee. That should take care of that dumb "ma'am"-issue.
I'd deal with other issues (parents etc - but you're over 18), as they arise.
Good luck, and stay away from cuts or "trims".
Hans-Uwe
Good luck
If you are african-american, you'll of course have to straighten your hair somehow if you want a sleeker look. Shoulder-length really isn't all that long, and if you got regular trims at that length any heat-styling damage would get cut off.
And I sympathize with the "ma'am" thing... it's happened to me. Facial hair is a good indicator of gender, yes.
//Hello Billy,
I encourage you to grow your hair like you want but why do you prefer straight if you are a Black man ? Do you think long frizzy hair or afro is not beautiful ? For my part I like fro or long frizzy hair (like Leny Kravitz before he makes his hair straight) very hot.

A MOUSTACHE is not only hot but a "Mam" deterrant.
