I've been growing my hair for the past two years. Up until last week I've been having doubts about keeping it. Then last Tuesday, I was working on a commercial where I met a man who use to have hair down to ass and a waist length beard. He chopped everthing off three years ago and upon seeing me he commented how much he regretted the decission. He showed me photos from the past and he looked much happier back then. He convinced me to stick with it and grow everything as long as possible. I realized it I didn't at least try I'd be miserable. So I'm in it for the long hall. I intend to become as hairy as I can possibly get,
This guy also argued that for most of history long hair and beards have been the norm . Most men secretely want long hair and/or long beards but are too afraid of what society will say. Men want what is easiest. What could be easier than growing long hair and beards? Of couse growing is easy maintaining is another story.
He also argued that it is Madison Avenue that has brain washed the public into thinking that clean cut is the only acceptable look. It takes a lot of money (products and servaces) to maintain a clean conservative look. If manufactures realized they could sell even greater amounts of products and services to long hairs and long beards the clean cut look would be in the minority.
What do you think? Can manufacturers make more money on Shampoos, conditioners, accessories, dyes, etc, than they can on razors, and barbershops? Are men willing to spend time and money maintaining a "natural" look?
i love the natural look....its only logical that longhair and beards are supposed to be there...thats why we grow them...unless ther evolutionry leftovers...meh
in most arabic countries in ancient times (the most advanced people of the time) people thought that men without beards look rediculous....hmmm maybe this sparked the whole growing beards thing that muslims do
i love the natural look....im definately going for that....altho i dont have 100% facial ahir yet so i shave it nowadays :p
that or the pronged beard like daron malakian and the nightwish bassist have....love that
There is no time like the present to go for the all natural look. Grow what you've got. If I had waited for 100% to grow in before starting I'd still be clean shaven to this day.
Manufacturers can make plenty on products for long hair and tools to maintain them, but stylists and barbers however don't make any when you have a style that lets you not drop in and give them money every six weeks.
Hi Kai,
Yes - Sometimes one doesn't don't realize what they have until, one day, it's not there anymore. Inevitably, remorse over the loss sets in.
On the flip side, sometimes one want's a change, they do it, and never look back.
Stay the course and more power to ya!

There is a famous business school case study concerning Gillette in Indonesia. Turns out half of Indonesians have no facial hair or minimal facial hair, so Gillette's razors did not sell well there because the men just didn't shave. Gillette had to teach them through marketing that unshaven = unclean. Distribution and price were also factors.
That pisses me off because I use a Gilette G2! I used to use other brands but had some problems such as occasional dud blades, discontinued lines etc.
Gilette sound as bad as Nestlé. I'll have to make a big 'Boycott List'.
Natural is the best look. A man's hair and beard that is terminal length is most natural and is in a state of equilibrium. It is only society, in the last 100 years or so, that has outlawed this look as being "homeless" or "unkempt". Man has been growing long hair and beards since the beginnings, the "clean shaven" look is a relatively new phenomenon. That man is wise.
The man made alot of sense.
They make Billions!
I doubt it.

This is a picture I saw that was in GQ or some other fashion magazine. I have no idea if all the exorbitant hairyness is for real, but nice to see nonetheless.
I think I spend way more on shampoo & conditioner than I ever did on haircuts. Even when I maintained very short hair I only got it cut every 5-6 months or so. Now, I still get it trimmed every six months at the same cost. When I had it short, it was just 2in1 shampoo, now it's conditioner, gel, additional combs, etc.
When I shaved my whole beard, I used about twice as many razors as now. Now, I still have to shave the neck and cheek area. Now I have a beard trimmer too.
It takes a lot of time and effort to look ostensibly unkempt & wooly!
Way cool photo. I predict that this is just the beginning. I forsee a future where a majority of younger men all have long hair and beards.
