if your hair/scalp is originally dry and you start taking Omega 3, how long does it take for your hair to become oilier and/or more manageable?
I do, and have for about 4-5 years. i take a Sam's Club brand which is known to be a quality store brand omega-3 as well. granted it has lower epa and dha then expensive omega but you can't go wrong with the price. i take 3-4 capsules with every meal and end up taking 12-15 a day. this is a lot for some, but dr sears reccommends even higher depending on the dosage and i know weightlifters who take 20-30 to help with weightloss. then again, i know people who only take 1-3 soft gels a days fine too, play around with it.
i recently gave a bottle to my girlfriend to see if it would help with her depression (omega is known to help with a LOT of things, from heart problems to improving cognitive function). i can't really say if it's helped with my hair since i've been changing how i treat my hair and it is looking great. i take a hair/skin/nails vitamin once a day too.
sorry to ramble, point being, you can't go wrong taking in omega 3. if you do, results don't come immediantely, but you should notice changes in as little as a couple weeks, as well as improvement in mood for many.
Yup, I have read a lot about Omega 3 - I take a brand called MorEPA which has 580mg per capsule and it recommends taking one capsule a day ...... what dosage do you take/recommend ??
580 what? epa, dha? most fish oils have 1000 mg of fish oil per capsule, but this doesnt matter, its the epa/dha content. so, most with this 1000 mg fish oil have 180 mg epa and 120 dha. when you start buying the concentrated or pharmaceutical brands they maybe something like 480 mg, 350 mg epa to dha per capsule, respectively. it varies.
dosage varies. here is what Dr. Mercula suggests, "For Carlson's Cod Liver Oil Softgels with Low Vitamin A, I highly recommend taking one softgel for every ten pounds of body weight. However, do not exceed more than 15 pills per day -- unless you have had your fatty acid levels tested."
that can be applied to other fish oil brands too.
depending on the specific reasoning behind why you are taking it, how much to take varies. for general health, 1-2 or so with each meal is fine. for rheumatoid arthritis, dr sears reccomends somewhere like 25 grams, meaning around 25-30 capsules (which he then tries to get you to buy his brand). for cognitive funcitioning it was like 15-20 grams. you can check out his book which is one of the 'go-to' books on the subject, "the omega zone"
Here are also some short reads (trust me they're not long things so they won't bore you) about the benefits of fish oil and such:

thanks. i knew about fish like salmon, tuna, and swordfish. thing is, my mom doesn't cook those lol she likes cooking tilapia. sometimes she makes tuna-fish salad but it's only on rare occasions. you can also get them from vegetables like chia (grown in mexico), walnuts (which i can't eat bc they make me sick =/), and some other plants i can't think of the name for.
Thanks for the reply :)
I take these : http://www.1stvitality.co.uk/morepa/morepa_capsules.htm
580mg EPA with 78mg DHA ..... I've read that DHA actually works against EPA so its best to keep its levels low ??
Did I read your post right - 20g of EPA for brain boosting effects !!
God damn .... I'd turn into a walking fish !!
with your pills, that is a really low amount of dha, yet a high amount of epa. no dha doesnt work against epa, atleast not that i know of i have never read that, and i have read a lot up on it. any pharmaceutical quality fish oil will be high in both of these.
dr sears suggests that amount. mercola suggests one capsule for every 10 pounds of weight. so that is 15 capsules (grams) for a 150 pound person, which isn't bad. i read today on a few forums a lot of athletes take 4 with each meal. then again my friends mom only takes 1-2 a day. it varies with whats best for you, but i would read up on it. i personally take 3-4 with each meal, for a total of about 12-15 capsules a day. i will lower it to 4-5 capsules in the future and note and differences. then i will quit it all together and see if it makes any differences. i know a lot who only take 1 with each meal for a total of 3 a day, which is fine too. even if i notice no differences i will still take 1-2 a day for sake of prevention purposes, much like a vitamin. meaning they don't produce immediate 'noticeable' effects but are similar to insurance in the fact they are there just in case and can't really do any harm.
let me know how it works out.
Hi
I actually read about the DHA being detrimental in this book : http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0340824972/qid=1143078108/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/202-8194382-9732601
The Doctor in this book urges using purely EPA and zero DHA !!
When you say capsules - do you mean 1000mg of fish oil (containing about 30% EPA/DHA) or do you mean 1000mg of pure EPA ??
Can I ask how long you have been taking the stuff ..... and have you seen any significant positive affects ??
From what I have read, it sounds as if Fish Oil is some kind of miracle cure for almost everything !!
Thanks :)
everyone states something different. rule of thumb is to follow the party, meaning most studies and such do not support that claim. just like dr greg ellis urges a ketogenic diet for health, but that sounds completely insane to modern medicine. a healthy amount of epa AND dha seems to be in favor.
i found this on the first site on the sidebar when i typed fish oil epa dha in google:
"DHA is More Important Than EPA & ALA
DHA is now known to be more important than EPA and ALA. The scientific evidence supporting the benefits of DHA is now overwhelming. Your prime objective for consuming Omega 3 should be to get DHA into your body.
The explanation as to why DHA is the most important substance, is somewhat technical and not possible to explain in an article such as this. However, if you would like to read a straightforward scientific paper on it, I would suggest that you review a paper by Lloyd A. Horrocks and Young K. Yeo. To access this paper please click here (opens new window)."
so it varies. i take both, like 95% of users. most fish oils at the store and the one i take is 1000 mg fish oil, 180 mg EPA and 120 DHA. that is a low amount, but if it is a quality brand and low price i prefer to take a lot of those soft gels and save money then take a low amount of expensive fish oil because it is concentrated better (for example, 300 epa and 240 dha).
i have been taking fish oils on and off for years. i do not know if it has affected me much because i never took it seriousely. i would take them some days and none another. plus, i am already in good shape and take care of myself so its hard to tell. i'm not one of those to claim it cured my depression or arthritis b/c those type of things don't burden me. i'm also the last person to fall for placebo effect so its hard for me to say when somethings working haha. many swear by fish oil, and by many i mean a TON. you just cant go wrong with it. i heard a college athletic coach swear its the best supplement. my grandma used to make my mom take a tablespoon of cod liver oil everyday. she looks very young for her age too. who knows, but just try around with it. and eat healthy too, there is no sense in taking fish oils then eating like crap. good luck =)
that's ok. as long as my scalp becomes more oily (and hopefully my hair becomes a shinier and heavier from the natural oils) that's all i care about lol
This is something I recently commented on on here too. I also take fish oil capsules for management of depression and I'm happy with the results. I take 6 capsules a day. Got fed up with drugs.
As to whether it helps my hair I'm not entirely sure, but if others have noted improvement from taking it, then my hair is probably also better for it.

I take Flax oil capsules, which are a plant source of potent omega 3. They are a bit more expensive than fish oil, however. They are so strong you only need two a day instead of 3.
Yes. I get mine in the form of cod liver oil and fresh ground flax seed.
