Hi guys,
I wonder if any of you could help me. I'm trying to grow my hair, the problem is it's really thick. At the moment, it nearly covers the ears and comes down to the bottom of my neck. I've been growing it for a few months now so when I've been going to the hairdressers, he's been thinning the top part with the scissors and just leaving the sides and the back to grow. The problem with this is that when I've had it done, it's as if I've got two hair styles on my head, the top part of my hair looks as if I should have short back and sides, whereas they are of course longer. The hair on the top of my head therefore isn't as long.
I probably shouldn't have had it cut this way in order to grow it long, but my hair tends to grow 'out', (which gives it its thickness), rather than down. It's totally straight and at at the moment is 'wig like' in appearance. It's as if I'm wearing a hat. I thought having it thinned at the hairdressers would allow it grow down but it hasn't worked out like that. What I was wondering was, has anyone been in the same situation and if so how did you overcome it and grow your hair long, if indeed you could? Is the 'wig' look just a necessary drawback to the process of growing it long? Could you recommend any hair products to get rid of the wig look?
Thanks for you help guys,
Tizzle.
You probably shouldn't have cut it at all. Many here agree that to grow long hair, you should just leave it alone to grow: no trimming to even things up. It seems to sort itself out in time.
I had that problem to some extent. The right side of my head has a patch that grows straight out and I wondered if anything could be done about it. I eventually discovered that gravity was the only cure. It's no longer a problem, and I'm only at my 5 month mark.
Do you have any pics you could post? Not sure what could be done other than getting minor trims in areas other than the problem area on top that was trimmed too much.
The moral to the story is to resist allowing any scissors near your head for about 12 months from the time you wake up one morning and say "I'm going to grow my hair long".
Perhaps someone else can give further advice?

You should stop getting your hair layered. I have curly/thick hair and i'm still waiting for it to 'drop'. Gravity will win out in the end as it gets longer and increases in weight.
So just leave it to grow. That's all. Once you can tie a ponytail it will be more managable and you will be able to 'tame' your hair.
I would side with 80s_Metal opinion 100.%
I agree to 80s_metal earlier opinion. You should just keep it growing without thinning it out. I have tried doing layering several times the last five years so but now I see should have let it be in the first plays. It looked fine the first two weeks or so but then the same thing occoured as you mentioned, it just seemed to "grow out" and get even thickier without gaining in lenght. In the end I think it has added a certain style to it as it looks a bit messy now with the longer hair overlaying the inner previously shortened. But when your hair reaches a certain lenght it's weight will keep the rest of the hair down your scalp.
