I found an interesting article on the regulation of hair length in high schools back in the 60s and 70s. It's long, but an interesting read.

High School hair regulations. Thanks so much, Al, for this great read! I graduated from High School in '71 (as I remember... gee, i HOPE I'm remembering correctly - lol!!), so I remember a few years before that what a huge BIG, BIG DEAL men's hair length was, and how many guys in school fought that dress code (I lived in a suburb of Chicago, IL at the time). My father would not allow my brothers and I to even have hair touching the top of our ears during my entire childhood & teen years. When my dad & step-mom divorced the year I was a freshman in college, I decided to leave home at that age (18), and start in the work force, --- all because I could no longer stand my militaristic dad's insistance on me having to wear my hair short. It cost me a college education; but it spelled a much-needed freedom from his abuse & dictatorial control over me. So, YES, I remember the era well!!!
