I bought a clarifying shampoo today. The brand is Pears and it was very cheap and also contained citrus extracts and other natural ingredients. I used it on my hair to remove all the cones buildup which has been accumulating for many months and i can see a HUGE improvement in my hair quality already.
I shampooed with the clarifier , left for 5 mins, rinsed and repeated again. The damage at the back of my hair appears to have been repaired and it is not so brittle and dry at the ends anymore. For months i have been struggling with dry, brittle, frizzy and discoloured hair at the back of my head. Sun damage was a factor to worsen the problem but i do believe harmful build-up was the primary reason for my hairs poor quality. Now my hair is actually retaining the moisture rather than blocking it out like before. The mistake i used to make was that i would dry my hair out even further by applying more silicones and not rinsing them out , became an awful cycle.
I thought clarifying might dry my hair out even more but it actually was a good 'detox' for my hair and made it shiny afterwards and smooth.
After the clarifier i conditioned well with my natural conditioner which is cone free. Left to sit for 20 mins and then rinsed out about 50% of it.
Thanks to Fallen Angels who advised to me about the benefits of clarifying shampoos and natural conditioners. You use this method yourself and your hair looks very healthy.
I would advise everyone to RINSE THOROUGHLY if you are using a silicone based conditioner. If you don't rinse you will get awful build-up like what i went through and it will ruin the conditioner of your hair and stress out badly. A clarifier every 2 weeks or so should be used to remove any excess residue buildup.
If you don't wanna use cones altogether you should start using a natural, organic or herbal conditioner(I believe all names imply the same product). That way you can leave conditioner in your hair, just like how a leave-in conditioner functions and not worry about it having a drying effect on your hair.
I'm so happy that i have found products/methods that work best for me and my hair is back to it's excellent quality. My 'split-ends' appear to have dissapeared aswell, they weren't really split ends, just dry ends. My hair is in 110% condition at the moment - soft, silky, well defined curls, no frizz or dryness.
I'm very happy with these new products and would recommend this method to anyone. Cheers.
I have been using Garnier Fructis Sleen n Shine shampoo and conditioner and on the 3 days I skip shampooing in a row, I just use conditioner and don't rinse it all off when I'm done, sort of my own version of a leave-in. But since this conditioner has these 'cones, maybe its drying out my hair while I'm hoping it will moisturize it. Think leaving in a little conditioner thats not a leave-in is a bad idea? It certainly helps when combing it after a shower (as opposed to just washing my hair with water and then combing it out after it dries some)
A little conditioner residue is safe and it does help with combing etc.
It also depends on how harsh the conditioner is(Pantene has alot more cones than anything else).
I used to be really extreme ,like conditioning my hair and not rinsing or 'forgeting' to rinse all day, stuff like that is bad. But you're fine.
Thank you for the advice. I think I will give that a try and see how I get on.

it's great to hear that you found something that works very well for you. my conditioner has some cones in it, but i always rinse it out. then i put a bit of oil in the very ends of my hair. but i must admit that your method sounds like a very good one. best of luck.

I'm really glad you found something that works for you! I don't a few silicones here and there would be bad for your hair type (providing they're properly rinsed out), but your new method is a superior one in the end, if you stick to it.
Keep us posted on the results!
