Elo, been trolling this site for years, but never had a single problem with me long hair till' now (I think...).
I went in for a yearly maintenance trim today, and ended up getting a few surprises....maybe they should not have been....
First off, the woman doing my hair said my scalp was red, now, my scalp had itched the day before, but I thought nothing of it. I looked for lice and dandruff, none were found. She also said my hair seemed kinda dry, and that my hairline seemed like it was receding (I've never noticed that before if so, and so far I've looked, I don't think my hairline is receding, but my part DOES look wider than it used to be, or so I think).
Second off, I have been going outside more (I have lots of computer related projects going on on and off work), and the weather here in Washington is nothing like the weather in Alabama (of which I moved from), it's much dryer here in comparison from my experience, and on top of it, I've been eating MUCH less greasy food than I used to, which used to make my hair oily rather fast.
Anyway, she did the trim and light layering I have done, and then sold me some of this ISO shampoo/conditioner bundle (not a 2 in 1, a package of both), and this other dandruff type stuff called Ecocare Mazzcotta. Before this all I have used is Pert Plus for Oily and Fine hair (since mine is/was both)
Maybe needless to say, I have headphones on while I'm on the computer, I use a set of old hacked-together Koss headphones with foam things across the top, I took em off and am going to see if maybe that has something to do with it too, since it seems the general area of itching is from that area where the thing going across the top of my head sits.
Either way, is it a Drying Agent in the Pert that's causing this, because I recall changing shampoo type once because of a similar issue a few years ago due to thin hair. I try to wash it every day, but some days I don't (kind of sporadically), if it goes more than a day without being washed though, it gets TOO oily.

Your hair is used to being washed often so it will produce more oil to compensate, if your hair gets used to being washed less often (say once every 3-4 days) it will produce less oil and your hair will look better imo.
Pert plus and such are known to be strong (see harsh) on hair because of the strong chemical components, this probably doesn't help.
Well my advice is to try and wash less often with another kind of shampoo, and put lots of conditioner, see what happens.

Well, I've got the Shampoo changed that's for sure, thank god it was 50% off! I have some stuff called ISO bouncycare/bouncycondition, I've never heard of it before, that's for sure. Might have to check back in a few days and see how this works.
They put some conditioner in my hair before I left, I can see some improvement already. When I lived down in the very humid south I got a lot of ladies saying they wanted my hair. So I'm assuming this has something to do with humidity too. Though how I can fathom it being so dry near the Puget Sound is beyond me.
I myself have used a "little bit" of Pert in the past, and that because it appeared to add volumn to my hair. However the one I have stuck with (with pert now ancient history) that has worked the best of all for myself has been the line of Aussie Products. They can be found in almost any grocery store and don't even cost all that much. Perhaps at least give them a try? Also, with hair your length, you may find that less washing will produce better results after a time. If you click on my avatar you will see the results of mostly Aussie all the way thus far.
