why does my ends always get so damn curly? It's good right after i shampoo + condition, but after a few hours the ends start to curl and whenever i try to put it in a ponytail in that state it just curls and looks kinda messy.
will this get better with added length or do i have to trim it?
i think i've been growing for approximately 13-14 moths or so.
No matter the length of your hair, the ends will likely always curl. My hair is about mid-shoulderblades now, and while there's enough length and weight to straighten out 1/2 to 2/3 of my hair, the ends still curl. If you try to trim the curls off, you'll end up with shorter hair that's still curly on the ends.
Cheers,
Jeremy
This can be a source of frustration! Mine too has a tendency to do this. My hair is about 4-5" past the shoulders now, and I wear it in a tail every day for work. It's long enough now to do a segmented/couple of bands tail, so I've found this is what works for me. It was a real pain going thru the awkward phase, and if it bugs you as much as it bugs me (which it appears it does), it can start to feel like you're in a perpetual awkward phase. I also find that using a combination of Infusium 23 (for frizzy hair..white bottle with red top), Jojoba oil on the tips, plus a little gel helps to some degree. Like Jeremy mentions, this also allows my hair to be ~ 2/3 - 3/4 straight for the most part, with the ends getting a bit of a curl or flip as the day goes on. I think Jeremy is also right regarding cutting it: it will only give you a shorter version of what you already have, thus prolonging the bogosity. :O) I am waiting till I get closer to my goal length (mid-back) before I have a very small (really small) trim of the ends.

'Got a possible solution.
I've grown mine out multiple times (hey, I like a lot of different styles). I have fine/wavy-to-curly hair and when it reaches a certain lenghth it starts to curl out at the bottom. I used to turn it under with a blow-dryer, etc, which isn't always the look i wanted.
The last time, instead of combing it wet or while it dried, I just sort of fluffed out the ends with my fingers-- going with the tendancy to curl-- and even accentuating it a bit. That way you don't have that straight-with-goofy-flip-at-the-bottom look. Your hair has some curl it can look OK. Just make the curl work for you.
