So...I've been growing my hair for about 12 months, and I'm having some issues with my hair. First, I'll give you some backstory...um...I'm 17, and up until this week I would just flip my bangs to my right side, like alot of teenagers my age do. The reason I haven't started parting it down the middle like I want to do is because I want the bangs to get past my chin (without me having to pull them down) and more importantly, I want school to end so I don't suddenly just change my hair and everyone makes a huge deal over it. It's much easier to come to school with almost a completely different hair style when school starts then doing it randomly one day in the year.
So, my latest problem is that it's gotten too long to flip to my right, as the left side keeps coming down. This pulls the rest of my bangs, and creates really unattractive gaps of skin between my bangs. So lately I've been doing this (sorry for the dark picture):

The problem with this is that when I get face down (and in school, that's going to be quite often) and I raise my head, the bangs have all gotten messed up, so I have to redo it. After doing this quite alot per day, you tend to get tired of it. Plus if people notice I do it alot, it looks like I'm always fixing my hair (in the bad way that makes people look self-centered, not in the way that's actually happening, hah) and by the end of the day the parts I touch repeatedly get pretty greasy, making it even more unmanigable. SO, I've been thinking of hairspray. This may seem like a easy, and maybe even common sense question, but I must ask it. Well, it's not really a question. I just need to know about hairspray, and such. I obviously wouldn't put on alot, so my hair still looks nice. Is that even possible? Is it possible to put on hair spray so your hair still goes to some basic formation, but your hair still looks and feels nice and natural?
What type should I use?
And, um, yea, that's it. This would probably only be a temporary style, as once school ends I'd be parting my hair or putting it up in a ponytail (one that a samurai would wear).
Just tell me anything I need to know about hairspray.
Oh, and to show you how long my hair is, and what I look like with it parted now, here's a picture (I don't know WHY I made a pouty face):

Welcome,
Long post hehehe.
Your hair is looking great and the side part really suits you immensly. You look great with long hair dude.
You seem to be overly self-concious about what others think about your hair. I can be at times aswell, best to do your own thing and not worry about others. If you want to grow your hair long you are being an individual and part of that means not caring what others think of you or your image.
You could try hairspray but it does tend to dry hair out and make it 'hard'. I use a bit of hairspray when i tie a ponytail because it keeps my hair together and everything sits in place nicely. You might want to let it grow a little more before you start tying a ponytail but since you are still in the awkward stage you just gotta be a man and tough it out for a few more months. You will get through, infact you are almost there. Good luck.
I guess I am somewhat worried about others, but it's also because I've always been a bit of a perfectionist with my hair. Not in the way that I take out a mirror every 5 minutes, but just one in that I'll start trying to not worry about it at all, then I'll allow myself to make an adjustment, and before I know it, it turns into me trying to get it just the way I imagine it (and when does that EVER turn out right?).
Oh well, I like the comb suggestion, that sounds pretty good. I guess on Sunday I'll use some and see how it works, and if it's horrible I can just take a shower.
And about the whole more stuff you put on it, the worse it'll become, as I said, this is very much a temporary thing until school ends, and it'll probably be just school days, so that's only about 40 days. Minimal hairspray appliance shouldn't noticably damage it in that time, but I really doubt that I'll do hairspray, for some reason.
Welcome to the wonderful world of long hair. Most any good brand hairspray will do the job. All hairsprays do the same thing: coat your hair with a plastic-like substance that hopefully washes out later. They can dry and damage hair, especially with repeated use.
My best advice to anyone who wants to have good-looking long hair is to minimize the stuff you put on it. The more sprays and other junk you put on it now, the less healthy and lusterous it's likely to look when it's been hanging around for two or three years. Less is best. Use a really good shampoo and a really good conditioner and little or no more.
Everybody worries too much about their appearance when their 17. Trust me. You're beautiful! Smooth your hair with your hand now and then. Check it in the restroom every so often.
Take care of it, it will look great and everyone will envy you.
Your hair looks good to me. Just my opinion, but i think the side part suites you better.
Agreed. You have that "longhair face" either way, but the side part really seems to add immensely to the beauty of your hair. But I guess the annoyance factor is the deciding one in the end.
Your hair looks great either way.....
Your hair is obviously thick and heavy, so I doubt if spray is going to hold your bangs back.....but with just a little more length, they will be part of the hair that falls to the back or part of a ponytail.
In the mentime, if you want to try hairpsray for control.....spray it on your comb or brush, then style your hair.....seems to hold better without forming a "surface crust".
Good Luck
