I've been a longhair (of some sort) since high school, growing for length since about 1990...currently tapering at thigh length. At this point, I've gotten about all the length I can from neglect, so I'm starting to take better care of it...although I'm pretty sure terminal length isn't too far away for me.
During the day, I'm a cranky city bus driver for the San Francisco Municipal Railway, otherwise, lots of hiking, sushi, live performance and messing around on the internet.
I'm very glad the really annoying stage of shoulder-length to mid-back is long past...it gets easier after that.
Hey, I live in SF and took MUNI buses for over 11 years, and I've met PLENTY of you "cranky city bus driver" types, --- WELCOME, anyway (lol!)!!
I now own & drive a small pick-up truck, I'm happy to say; but I am curious to know the bus route you normally drive, anyway. I curently live in the Mission Dist.; but I'm familiar with all parts of the city, since I've lived in SF since basically '77.
In any case... that's some AWESOME hair length you've got there! Mine just now reaches the top of my belt, so I have a long way to catch up to you. Also, if you have a chance, please feel free to share more pics here. And, BTW, that's a cool hair bracelet (or what ever you call it, it looks GREAT)!
Again, WELCOME!
- Ken in San Francisco
Thanks :)
45-Union (Caltrain, Union Square, Chinatown, out Union St to the Presidio.)
Hair cuff. Attached to a hair elastic, once the elastic is on, the cuff settles over the ponytail. That is one of my weaknesses...hairtoys...can't possibly have enough hairtoys! And, of course, the good ones (hairsafe) tend to be more expensive.
And...here is my April Fools Day image...
That's a great pic of your amazing knee length mane. Absalom has the same length hair as you. Your hair looks quite healthy despite the level of neglect you stated.
So hair gets easier as it gets longer? i though the opposite.
Do you usually wear it tied up in a bun when you are working?
How tall are you? I guess about 180 cm so your hair would be atleast 1.5 metres or so. Nice mane.
Hello,
Wonderful hair, and in San Francisco it is pleasant that bus drivers are allowed to keep their hair long, like in Montreal as well. I have seen a few subway and bus drivers with shoulder length hair or longer, thought they are not the majority.
Last time I have been to San Francisco was 1987
Georges
Sort of. Maintenance isn't much more, and you are very used to dealing with it.
Assymetric ponytail over my left shoulder.
178cm. My hair is 128cm/50.5"...that IS my April Fools Day image. :)
Absalom will be heartbroken. His mane is a paltry 44 inches long, and he now no longer has the longest mane on the board.
Bill
I think the measurement method he used is from the front hairline over the top of the head and down to the ends. Mine measures about 53" by this method.
He put up a photo of his hair that was not doctored and his hair is in fact about the same length as mine.
Absalom
Well that justifies that. Everybody can relax...Absalom still has the longest mane on the board :)
Well, that is a change, elsewhere I am not longest, not even with the doctored image. Heck, I have an occassional rider who has hair that is knee length, although I am probably longer in inches.
Ack! have to go to work.
Let's pack a big picnic lunch, bring along a boom box and a few broad tipped markers, go board the 41 Union bus, and break it all out for a party in the back of the bus. We'll board through the back door of course! [evil grin]
Bill
ROFL!!! Yep, you're still a teen-ager at heart, Bill; but I bet the undercover police on MUNI won't know what to do with us 3 long-haired geezers after tagging all the seats & windows. Maybe we'll become famous grafitti artists (but not necessarily for our "artwork" - lol!)!! NO rap music over the boom box, though: Swing music ONLY, --- that way I can invite all my favorite dance partners to join in on the outing, Jitterbugging in the aisle all the way to the picnic spot!
- Ken
"Hey! You kids in the back, yeah, you with the long hair, I don't want to hear you, I don't want to see you and I sure don't want to feel you dancing around. If you don;t believe me, ask the real kids around you if I have a problem with putting people off the bus!"
Heh! You act like kids, I'll treat you like kids...specifically my school trip out of Marina Middle School. I've trained them to self-police themselves.
to see you guys doing that would be soo funny
Welcome Trolleypup, glad you could join us. Dude, your hair is magnificent, and it appears to be even longer than mine. (To see how long mine is, click on my photo.)
Your hair appears to be in good shape even though you say there is some damage. It is nearly impossible to grow hair to such a great length without seeing some damage at the ends. You are obviously taking reasonably good care of your hair or it would not have reached such a great length.
Long hair forever.
Absalom
Trolleypup, I'm not sure whether it was your post of part of a follow-up post, It started to get a little confusing. So who entered the "April fools" part of the post?
My question is: Was it you and that's not your real hair? If so, what does your real hair look like?
My hair looks like that, just not as long. Unmodified image below.
Thanks for clearing that up. It's Monday and my little grey cells are not yet working at full speed.
I have to admit that I'm just a bit disappointed that the original photo was the April Fools joke. None-the-less, your real hair length is very impressive, and the hair itself is very beautiful. You must get a lot of questions about your hair from your passengers. I hope they're all positive.
Mostly. There are a few people (bitter older balding men to a one), who peeve at me. I decline to take their crap "Don't like it? Don't ride my bus!". Then there was the guy who freaks out over my hairclips (often with sparklies) and went off over the gayness "As if that is a bad thing in this City? Perhaps you should move to Modesto?" I immediately went out and got a barrette clip that was entirely covered with 140 rhinestones, and the next time he rode, I turned my head to show him and said "Isn't that pretty! So Sparkly!" He turned red and got off the bus, and now he won't ride with me (I WIN!).
One day the little boys from Marina were saying "Our busdriver is gay" to each other outside before I opened the doors. I didn't say anything, just grinned and thought to myself "they are going to be hating the rest of the week!" The next day, as I approach their stop, the destination sign changes from 45-Union/Caltrain to GAY PARADE (in 12 inch high letters). By Friday, the instigators were getting abused by their classmates. Regular adult riders who witnessed the original statements were hysterical.
I mean, if you want to go there with me, you better be willing to go all the way there!
Your narratives don't indicate a "cranky" bus driver; just a hilariously mischievous one, --- OMG, I wish I had been there to witness the faces of those Marina boys!!!!!!!
- Ken (still giggling!)
You've got a great attitude and a subtle yet quick wit. I applaud you sense of humor and your magnificent hair . . . oh that hair!!!
If I ever make it out to SF, I'd hope you'd let me buy you a cup of coffee.
I love your thinking!
They've "made their beds" now you make 'em sleep in it!
LMAO...
- Oren
And this is the other April Fools Day image...photoshopped to calf length, with a cut line at my actual length. Originally posted under the title of "Thinking of Cutting..."
I had a hunch that the photo was doctored, but was not 100% sure. It does appear that your hair reaches the backs of your knees, though. My hair is about 2 inches shy of knee length.
I am amazed our paths have not crossed since I hike with Bill along many of the same routes you use. San Francisco is a great place to hike.
Absalom
Nah, I'm only to thigh length.
My local hikes tend to be pretty impromptu.
During the winter, I do a lot of volunteer trailwork down in the Ventana Wilderness (mountains above Big Sur), at least when it isn't raining continuously. Summers tend to be up in the Sierra.
I rarely post to BayAreaHiking or Confused due to participant quality (I expect people to be able to do the hike I am posting, and I'd rather go solo than have to babysit or modify my plans.
Keep me in mind if you do something this weekend if the weather doesn't suck. Assuming the weather is better the following three weekends are going to be down in the Ventana.
Even so, your hair is very long. I noticed your hair type is 1c- 2a C iii. (Yes, I am a member at the Long Hair Community Board too.) Coarse hair is the most durable and resistant to damage. My hair type is 1c-2a F-M ii. My hair is very fragile, and the way I got such great length was to keep it tied in a segmented tail using about 10 hair ties. Mine is probably a bit longer than yours. It is hard to tell, since I have a short torso compared to limb length. I have the leg length of a man 183cm tall but stand 175 to 176cm tall.
When hiking up Mt. Tamalpais, I have removed large rocks or fallen branches from trails during a hike. If people would do this on their hikes, the trails would stay in much better shape.
I would like to, but I am recovering from a sprained groin. I should be OK in a month or so. I injured some of the weight bearing muscles in my leg. I can ride my stationary bike though (which does not use those weight bearing muscles) enabling me to stay in near top condition while I mend.
Also, there are great places to hike over here in the East Bay near where I live.
Absalom
I'm always thanking my mom...Shanghainese wire rope hair, I can get away with quite a bit of hair abuse.
Indeed. Situation is more dire in the Ventana, since the Forest Service doesn't do trailwork anymore, and most of the wilderness is in fire recovery mode (brushBrushBRUSH!!!) Casual hiking gear down there starts with loppers/shears and a folding saw.
That isn't any fun. Hope you had fun injuring yourself...I usually do stupid stuff like falling off curbs.
Same here, my mom had beautiful long hair back when I was young.
I am thankful towards her for the beautiful long hair I now enjoy.
You are fortunate to have asian ancestry. Asians have the strongest most damage resistant hair of all. I only recently discovered just how strong asian hair is. I have a friend who is Chinese who was over for a visit. Some time after he had left, I found a black hair 522mm long and 100 microns in diameter. It is very strong and stretch resistant, like a piece of steel wire. Truly amazing.
The injury resulted from a bicycle crash. In a freak accident, I crashed on a soccer ball. Although the odds are atsronomical, this is the SECOND time I have crashed on a soccer ball. The first time happened many years ago while pedaling around the bike track at the polo field in Golden Gate Park. Some jerk kicked a soccer ball onto the track while I was approaching. I was not hurt that time, but shaken and angry. I gave a piece of my mind to the soccer coach.
Absalom
Welcome!!
from the small pic it seems you have really nice black hair!!!
Welcome aboard!
Superb looking hair in your reply to Ken below!
- Oren
I ride the 35 Eureka - if you ever drive that route say 'hello' if you see me. I almost always have a bandanna around my head so that makes me easy to spot. Do you have your hair down at work, or is it in a tail? Knowing would make it easier to notice you.
I'm quite sure I saw you once a few years ago at the Market Street Railway meeting at the IBEW hall. We didn't talk to each other, but how could I not miss that hair! You have an awesome mane, man. I did not know you drove for Muni, of course, our having not spoken - my being there was because I've supported the F-line since the push for it in the early 80s.
I also hike a lot - up to the top of Twin Peaks almost daily. I enjoyed your hiking photos. I never knew that old roadway that goes under the bridge by the Dutch Windmill was once a Muni line! Nor did I know the 7 line used to go way out there instead of ending in the Haight like the 7 bus does now.
We corresponded once by e-mail, about hiking from Ft. Cronkhite to Mill Valley via Muir Woods. Other than that, our paths have probably not crossed despite all the hiking we both do. The San Francisco area is blessed with LOTS of trails! One can really get lost in solitude out there, which is cool so near to a large city.
Welcome to the Hyperboard!
I don't drive diesels, unless it is substitution on my line (I have enough seniority that I don't have to drive stuff I don't like). My hair is almost always in a ponytail over my left shoulder.
Work pic below...a few years old, but other than the bus, not much has changed.
I was a trolley geek before I worked for Muni. If you remember the Trolley Festival days, I was often found on the back of the Boat Car, "pupping" the pole (thus my username).
7-Haight to Playland!!! Oh for the days when one could take the streetcar to the roller coaster...days sadly over before I got to the City. :(
Absolutely. Although I have run out of new trails in the southern Marin Headlands.
Likewise!
Thanks!
Welcome to the board, man! What incredible hair you have.
But whats this?
You can't mean there's another awkward stage after the first one?! I was promised only one! :)
Thanks.
Well, I started from shoulder length with bangs, so that is the first annoying stage, although once it can be ponytailed, you can control the long end of that stage. Probably should be "short to upper back" now that I think about it.
Yes, there is a second annoying stage...somewhere around hip to tailbone length where it creeps around if it is loose and you have to learn a bunch of new hair reflexes related to sitting on it and stuff. By the time you get to classic length, it is pretty much settled down.
Hi Robert (you see I took a look at your homepage),
you have PHANTASTIC hair, and great length, thanks for showing it to us! I haven't been riding MUNI for quite a while, but I'm sure I'd remember you if I had been on your line ;-)
Living in Germany, I occasionally hit the SF Bay area to see some friends (when I can afford it), and I do know what a great region it is for hikes / outdoors.
All the best, and may your hair grow all the way down to your ankles (at least)...
Hans-Uwe
Well, you certainly have some long and well kept hair to have neglected it! I would love for you to check back when you begin to care for your hair, and let us see just how much longer it had gotten. I imagine however you have used the term neglect either tongue in cheek or loosely as it would be exceedingly difficult to have attained such a length if neglect were truly the case.
So the picture in the red outfit is not for real? It is a quite unique photo.
Good luck and welcome to this hallowed ground called the hyperboard.
bragi
Loosely, I think. My routine for a long time was shampoo and condition every 5-7 days, and detangle and brush as needed.
Early this year, I tried some variations on hair care, currently am doing Water Only (twice a week) with great results, especially , my scalp is much happier without products on it, and my hair stays in dependably good condition. Also, abandoned using the brush for finger combing and using a wooden comb, definitely less hair being shed. Started individually clipping split ends (dusting/S&D/whatever the term is here), and the tangles are much reduced. I will be trying some things to reduce mechanicala nd sun damage to my hair this year...but all of this is long term change...like you say, check back in a year.
The calf length image is a photomanip of the thigh length image...which is real.
Thanks.
Hi
Amazing hair . Do you wear any hair styles like braid, pony tail, half tail..........
Sam
My standard style is a nape ponytail. Sometimes I have it down. Infrequently I put it in a nape braid, and rarely (if the situation requires) I'll claw it up in a ugly wodge on top of my head.
Goad for this year is to learn some other styles. Maybe Pincess Leia buns to piss of the very crankies of my passengers?
Welcome to the board!
I'd shake your hand but I'm sick at the monent so I'd better not!
Anyways, you have a tremendous mane there. Bloody fantastic, and the way you treated those little brats...
who says longhairs are 'just a pretty face'?
Welcome!

Welcome!
By the way, are you a fan of the TV show Highlander by any chance? Your ponytail tie resembles a lot of the sort of ties that Adrian Paul wore on the show. Again, bloody fantastic!
Thank you for that! :)
I like my lessons to be memorable.
Besides that this board is the only longhair place I'm on where you actually see faces? LOL.
No, actually don't have a TV...I was looking for a hair cuff, and that one just appealed to me.
Trolleypup, this place has sorely needed a man to show that sparkly hair goodies are for everybody. Thanks for showing up here too.
Elizabeth, Countess DeJager
Hey! Not ALL my hairtoys are sparkly, some of them are shiny!
I actually have a number of wooden barrettes that I'm not using at the moment...the metal clips have died and the finish on the wood is messed up from heavy use. Also have some stunning burl wood ones on order.
