If using two windows just doesn't cut it for you, the previous URL will still work.
And I thought that a second window would use up MORE bandwidth!
A second window uses more real estate on your monitor (well, unless you resize the windows smaller). The bandwidth is cut down because you have to load the main board only once per visit. With a single visit, depending upon your browser settings, you could be loading it every time you go back to the main board after viewing a message. This causes unnecessary strain on the server.
Good! No TIME-CONSUMING reloading! Now I could always go back to my main board!
My only difficulty with it opening up a second window to read the message is that my browser (Netscape 4.7) no longer marks a message in the first window as having been read by changing the text color. Any suggestions?
I am familiar with that problem with Netscape. If that hampers you ability to navigate the page, feel free to use the previous URL. The latest version of IE does not have that same problem, BTW.
I'm sorry, but you may have to re-load.
Yes, a reload will resolve the problem. However, that is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. A reload is what uses up bandwidth.
i usually bypass the board entirely & navigate from message to message by clicking 'next' or editing the number in my location window- & bookmarking the first "file not found" after the last message post.
We can help Victor by setting our caching in our web browsers. In Netscape, this is under Edit, Preferences, Advanced, Cache. IE users can probably find a similar setting.
I set mine to fetch a new copy once each session. If the main board page loads faster after the first time each visit, you probably have this properly set. Also, you do if when you post a message, you do not see your message in the list without clicking "reload" or "refresh".
