Hello, I am 16 years old, and I wan't to grow my hair out long but the problem is, I have very very thick hair! and when I start to grow it out, it piles up, and looked like I cam from the 70's, the right side of my hair by my ear curls, and the bangs are curly/wavy naturally, I have been using a hair straightener to fix that problem, also when growing out long it curls in the back also. can anyone take a look at my pic and tell me what ya think like is this normal?
Below is an Assortment of alot of different pics of myself.
That is called the awkward phase which is perfectly normal and last about 4-6 months depending on your type of hair. It goes away as your hair grows longer.
Curly/wavy hair is not a problem and you should not straighten it, embrace it, and care for it, and it will pay off when it get's longer.
Lots of people pay hundreds of dollars to get to make their hair curly so you should at least give it a try, for free!
Never fear. I have yet to see someone on this Hyperboard who grew their hair out that didn't look well. No reason you will be any different. There is an "Awkward Stage" to go through where your hair does all kinds of crazy things. Once through that, all will fall into place perfectly regardless of the type of hair you have.
Hi Logan,
having seen your assorted pictures, I'd say, let it grow long, and let it grow wild! It'll look great, no matter what shapes it takes on the way, and it'll fall into place once it's really long - that's for sure. Don't use chemical straighteners - they might render your hair even frizzier in the end, and fragile and dry.
I just hope you won't have to face any nonsense from parents or from fellow students - if someone gives you crap, don't let that discourage you. Leave a post on this site if anything happens that is important in the hair context. Make sure you keep in touch with friends who will encourage you to do what you want to do anyway. It's your head and your hair, not someone else's - you have all the right in the world to feel good about your hair and your looks.
Have fun on the way.

Welcome,
I enjoyed your screen dump of the collection of different pictures. The skinhead look suits you, suprisingly.
I have thick/curly hair and my hair used to grow up like an afro when i was in the awkard stage. Just give it time - perseverance and dedication pay off in the end.
Your hat will be your best friend in the awkward stages of growing. All the best and keep us posted.
To show you thick curly hair you can see mine:
I have been growing for 17 months since a close buzz.
That's exactly what's happening here, I also have thick and wavy hair, but it think it's worth to try it. I'm in my 5th month now, my hair is about 3,5 to 4 inches long now, and I like how ot feels! ;) Sure, there are really bad bad days but I try to just grin & bear it!
Let it grow if you feel like doing it!
Best regards, Alex

Hmmmm....
Now this is a longhair support forum, so what kind of response would you expect? Most, if not all the registered members will say that your hair would look alright long and FWIW I agree. Grow your hair though I'd suggest sparing the effort to straighten it... the body is what will give it character. Chemicals and heat can give it damage.
Good luck.
It's worth a try. The picture at the bottom right of that screenshot makes me think it would suit you.
Yes, you probably did find it a bit tedious in a previous attempt, but as everyone here is saying, there are awkward stages to get through on the way to long hair. I'm certainly going through one right now (just about to the 6 month mark), though I get the feeling my awkward stages won't be as awkward as what others go through, since my hair is pretty much dead straight.
Nevertheless, my hair has played mind games with me from time to time. That is, I've felt ready to give the whole thing away and cut it, but I have persevered, and am determined not to give in. I'm pleased with my hair so far, except for some parts not doing what I want, but the usual advice is to just leave it alone: it will sort itself out in time.
Unfortunately you have to (most probably) look a bit silly for a few months while you're doing this. If you can cope with that, you'll be fine.
Good luck!

Hello Logan...
Look, if you want to grow long hair, and specially if you have thick hair (which, I have to say, looks very good when long) you have to go trough the awkward stage. In this stage your hair is suposed to look not so good, but anyways it's a funny phase to go trough. After the awkward stage all the flipies, unconfortable curls and all the strange mooves on your hair go away to give place to beautyfull long locks. Therefore, if you want to grow your hair long, go ahead buddy! Just give it a year or so of big big patience and a good hair care routine and you'll see what you'll get ;) Good luck!!
Yes Logan it will look great long hair going by the Picture top right where you got long bangs lol you have had quite a few different haircuts lol
I say GO for it !
