Hey, I posted a thread a while ago, under a bad alias, so I'm starting a new thread. Been growing my hair for about a year now. Coping with the awkward stage isn't easy, but I hope it all be worth it in the end. I'm lucky in that my family is actually supportive. My dad had long hair when he was my age, so that's really cool.
I have a problem with the hair on the right side of my head never doing what I want it to, but I've been told that it will pass when my hair grows out longer.
Eventually I hope to grow it below my shoulders a bit so that I can put it behind my back when I eat or whatever.

Sorry, don't know how to make it post a picture in the thread.
I just have one concern: I use to do mixed martial arts and Brazilian Jujitsu (think boxing and wrestling if you don't know what those are) before I hurt my knee. Well, that was before the hair would get in my eyes, so it was fine. Now I want to start up again and I'm not sure what to do with my hair. I can't put it in a pony tail yet. Anybody have any similar problems?
Yes, going through the awkward stage can be very difficult but if you want
long hair it will be worth the trouble.
And it's great that your father also had long hair!
Good Luck
My dad actually let it grow down to his shoulders, but I can't find a picture of him like that.
His brothers had long hair, too, and now my brother is kind of growing it (I think he wants to imitate me, but doesn't want to make it obvious. He's 13, so I can see right through him, though. ;) ), so I think it's a family thing.
Oh thats great its good that he wants to follow his big brother into growing his hair for whatever reason it is he might even like having long hair to !

Hi
Welcome to the Hyperboard. Great to have you here. Before going any further, (unless you have already) click on "links" and it will bring you to several very good articles to read about how to become a Longhair. For starters I would highly suggest the "Bible of them all" written by by Bill Choisser. There are other good things to read about long hair such as the the one by Ed etc. You will, find yourself well-armed at that point as to how to deal with most anything that comes along.
Well-armed to a point.
Everyones hair-type is a bit different so a certain amount of experimenting of what works best for you will most likely come into play. All the guys here know what you are going through, and you will receive many suggestions. Just don't give up. You WILL have great long hair in the end. It never fails and I have yet to see one guy yet on this Hyperboard in almost 4 years that didn't look great with long hair and stuck-out the difficult "Awkward Stage" of which you are in at the present. There is no way out of it except letting the hair grow until all will automatically in the end fall into place.
But just for now and about hair getting in your eyes. Perhaps wearing a Bandana might just be the solution?
Again, welcome.
Justin
Thanks for suggesting the links, I'll check them out.
I'm definately going to stick to it. I looked like a total doofus with short hair and it always bugged me. I didn't want to gel it and I never felt comfortable with it. The longer it's gotten, the more comfortable I feel in general.
These sports have lots of contact, so I think the bandana would come off. The only girl in class (and she's married to the instructor, too :( ) binds her hair in a pony tail and it is more less stable throughout class, but I haven't gotten to that point yet.
You're welcome.
You sound like a true Longhair at heart.
The Ponytail takes time to really get a good one as all of the hair in the front has to make it to the back. From a "buzz cut" to 2 years should make it at that point very easy. IN the meantime, the Bandana seems to do the trick for just about everyone. Don't worry, just let all grow and don't fall for trims in the beginning. It is the fastest way of getting the "Awkward Stage" out of the way and put you finally in a position of really being able to enjoy having long hair.
It does take a while, but there is just no other way to get there.
Sounds to me like you are one of those that ARE going to make it and have super long hair to die for in the end! :-)
Good luck in your journey to long hair. It really is a bit of a breeze once you get there.
Justin
ps: If you click on my photo you will see in the very last of the 12 pics where my hair was in a Ponytail in the Summer of 2004. Then compare to the present length on the top row which are rather recent photos. The same should happen to you along those lines. Just DON'T fall for the "Trim bit" or "Even-Out" as your hair is growing except for one thing: "Split Ends." But this is just a minor thing to get those nastys out of the way so as not to snag and tangle your hair to bits. You'll learn more of this as time goes by.
I was surprised when I read in the FAQ that many people don't stick it out. It's not like you have to DO anything. Just have to wait. =S
I think the worst is behind me now. I don't get nearly as frustrated anymore as I did a few months ago, so I think it's smooth sailing from now on.
One thing that surprised me is that picture of the back of my head. I hadn't even bothered to check how my hair looks from behind until that picture. I didn't think it was that long already. That's kind of cool. A girl sitting behind me in one of my classes told me I should cut my hair, because it's longer than hers. I laughed at her, but didn't know it was that long already.
The only hair that I just HAD TO cut were like 20 or 30 strands that strayed in a very weird way, so I just decided to do away with them. Really helped at the time, and you can't even tell now, so I think that worked out well. My mom has wanted to "even it out", but I had read somewhere (maybe even here) before hand that it's a bad idea.
Oh! Another quirk with my hair is that the day after washing (I've tried a few shampoo's, they all seem to do this) my hair is REALLY puffy. The next day and so on it's better, though. Anything I can do about that? Or will that also go away when my hair gets heavy enough to overcome the puffyness?
Gah, I'm rambling now. But I'm just glad I found this place.
About the puffiness deal - shampooing your hair strips it of its natural oils, and so it gets extremely dry and puffy. The next day, some of your oils will have returned, so it'll settle back down, but that first day can be trying. What you should try, if you don't already, is to use a conditioner on your hair after shampooing it, ensuring that you don't get conditioner on your scalp. This should cut down on a lot of the dryness.

Welcome to the Site

I like your hair looks great to i think there is a likeness between you and your father to will look better the longer it get to dont agree with you saying bad hair on the picture title looks ok to here it is to
I hope you dont mind it being posted as you did you didnt know how to post it
Regards Axel
His is really wavy, I don't think mine will look like that. He was the only person out of him, his two brothers, and his sister that had wavy hair like that, so I'm thinking he was a fluke. He also has black hair, neither me, my brother, or sister do (...what's my mom been up to...?)
Thanks for posting it. I'll figure it out one of these days. =S
It looks good some days (like today I'm REALLY happy with it) and some days it just goes where ever it wants. Especially on the right side of my head.
