Hello,
I was just wondering what not washing your hair for days/weeks results in? I mean I know all about the natural oils your hair makes, and that using shampoo removes those oils, but what good does it actually do to not wash your hair every single day? I will have gone 3 days now without wahsing it with shampoo...but I use conditioner everyday.
thanks,
Logan
The longer you go without washing, the more oily your hair gets. As the oil builds up, your hair gets heavier. As it gets heavier, it appears to thin out and appear matted. After a few weeks, it winds up looking like you just stepped out of the shower, only there's no water dripping from it.
In a word, to reflect my personal opinion of that stage:
Nasty.
I try and wash my hair at least once every couple or three weeks, and definitely when it gets to the point I just described above. A typical wash usually takes me around 20-30 minutes, and much of that time is spent pulling lose hairs out, despite brushing shortly before washing.
hey nyghtfall...out of curiousity what is that piece of jewellery on your finger? i'm referring to the pic in your avatar

i want one :p
Hey Logan,
I usually shampoo my hair once a week, but each day in the shower, I rinse it real good with warm water, finger comb it, and then use a conditioner. That seems to work good for me. Hope this helps!

for me it results in hair feeling a bit stuffy in around 8 hours or so, and in 24 hours starts to smell bad and feel stuffy and uncomfortable, and I hate that so I do shampoo a lot, better than your hair smelling like rancid oils...
Sometimes i don't shower for 2-3 days when i don't get sweaty or dirty and just use lots of deoderant. My hair gets oily near the scalp and my hair begins to look flat and messy unless i ponyail it. It's advisable to use conditioner about everyday/second day and use a shampoo once a week. Well that's what works best for my own hair anyway.
I wash and condition every 7 to 14 days, with The average interval being 9 to 10 days. It usually gets quite oily after about 7 days. Infrequent washing requires me to use a clarifying shampoo, which is the most efficient at removing that excess oil.

I think this answer will vary from one person to the next. Personally, I can't stand going longer than 48 hours without washing my hair. I produce so much sebum (mainly due to lots of combing for scalp massage - another story altogether) that as the 48 hour point nears, my hair is looking so greasy as though I have far too much product in my hair, even though I really have none in it. I'm sure with experimentation and time/length, I may be able to stretch the washings out a bit, but for the time being I seem destined to wash my hair 3-4 times a week. If I left my hair for even ONE week, let alone a few, my hair would look like someone had tipped a bottle of oil all over my head: a repulsive, greasy mess.

i wash mine every 2 days but i pretty much never condition.
With me, in the beginning stages I was washing every day. But as my hair grew longer, so did the intervals between washing. Now it is once a week or a bit longer and I see no bad effects.
When washing I ONLY Shampoo the top of my scalp, letting the water carry the shampoo on its own down the length. The shampoo is used 2 times as it lathers-up on the 2nd try. Then Conditioner follows with lots squeezed into the lenght only and just a small amount spread around the top of my head.
There was once a guy on this board known as "Resonance" who had the greatest long hair of everybody at the time. He told me in an email that he once didn't wash his hair for an entire year!
Guess the proof is in the pudding.
It all depends on the type of hair one has. Myself, I have very dry and and on hot humid days it's always a bad hair day.
I wash my hair two times a week.
Prior to washing my hair to prevent further damage I wet it, theh put conditioner on the ends, rinse, then wash, and follow with conditioner.
To add more shine in the final rinse I use cool water.
I see what you are asking Logan, 'why do people do that?'
Some people find their hair looks better the day after washing since the flyaways get a bit tamed by the oil. For longer hair another reason is that the hair for many just doesn't need to be washed daily since the length gets fed by the oils and absorbs it in.
The longer you plan on growing your hair the more important it becomes to skip a daily sudsing. If all a person wants is shoulder length the hair will be trimmed off long before shampooing will weaken the strands. On the other hand, if a man is after something extremely long that hair will need to be strong eight years later and hair is not sturdy enough to take that much cleansing even if the shampoo is gentle. Skipping a day between washing cuts that wear by half. It is no wonder people get into seeing how many days they are comfortable going between latherings.
And then there's also my particular reason for washing once a week, I'm not interested in putting the time in. The ten minutes (at most) to wash is not a problem but the loose hair to air dry for six some hours isn't always convenient. Makes a good time to read online though.
Somewhat damply,

Depends on your scalp and hair. I went to Water Only (no shampoo/conditioner), rinsing about twice a week, and I get pretty dependably good hair, a bit oily on top the first day until I detailing and do a good fine combing to move the new oil down the length. When I was using shampoo and conditioner, I was doing that about once a week, with widely varying hair quality (usually 3-4 good days). The adjustment period when I stopped using shampoo was pretty ugly though...a bit over a month that went all the way to otter in an oil slick before rather abruptly going to a normal steady state condition. Scalp is extremely happy.
