Disregard all previous postings of mine which said that i don't like ponytails and would never wear them unless required. Currently i am wearing my hair tied up in a ponytail about 85-90% of the time. It is such a low maintenance style and i don't have to keep fussing over my hair all day and looking in the mirror.(i have been very active with work and study lately and don't want to fuss over my hair). It stays put, even with gusty wind, all except for the flyaways and short hairs. I hate the wind, it irritates me.
Basically the ponytail has been my relief from worrying about my hair because its tied up and out of the face, out of my sight. Unless i side part my hair i find that my bangs still irritate me and i have to keep brushing them out of my face which is very annoying. It's good to just let your hair grow and not have to worry about it all the time, just leave it be.
Hair does look better 'down' but this is just much more practical for me at the moment, or atleast until i can obtain sufficient length where my hair will stay behind my shoulders and back.
I have also been cutting down on shampooing(both quantity and frequency), eating oily foods and only showering/bathing in luke warm/cool water so i don't strip away the oils. My natural oils are making my hair in A+ condition. The oils travel to the ends of the hair shaft by showering and also by brushing with a widetoothed comb. There was a post earlier and some people find oily scalps to be repulsive, nasty and dirty. When you think about it, it is natural, and this is how humans have been using oils in their hair for thousands of years before modern hair care products. Shampoos and conditioners are a new invention.
I havent been fully utilizing my scalp oils until now. I would recommend to try it for anyone reading this. It will make your hair softer, shinier, healthier looking and remove frizz, flyaways, dryness. It is more effective than a conditioner and it is natural and self-sufficient. Why didn't i think of this earlier. Don't get me wrong, i use a natural conditioner in addition to this but it does help alot and it's just a waste to remove it all. I'm gonna do another crazy experiment where i am not going to shampoo for a few weeks and see how oily my hair gets and the results on my hair. lol, i bet my mum is gonna get angry and tell me that i'm a pig for not shampooing my hair and that it stinks. I'll keep you posted.
Your hair will get curlier the less you shampoo it (to a point, of course), but tell your mom to fear not - it won't stink if take good care of it. I haven't shampooed in 4 months, and I'm smelling purdy. :P
Do you wear a normal ponytail, or do you do the loose one you talked about earlier where you only tie the band around your hair once? I've been trying those and I find them to be amazingly comfortable and natural-looking.
Curly hair does have advantages over straight hair. Many people with curly hair do not have to use shampoo. They can just rinse it out in the shower every 2 or 3 days. I have a friend who has curly hair and he does not use shampoo or conditioner, he just rinses with water. Curly hair dries very fast, usually in an hour or so. Overall, from what I have observed, curly hair needs less maintenance.
My hair is mostly straight, with some curly and wavy mixed in. Although my hair might rinse clean if I were to rinse it in the shower every 2 days, it takes about 6 hours to dry, or about 1 1/2 hours using a blow dryer on the low setting. To reduce maintenance time, I shampoo and condition only about once every 10 days.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I have a hunch most guys here with curly hair spend less time on their hair than I do.
Absalom
You certainly have a point about drying time. My hair is almost completely dry within 2 hours of washing. Tonight is the first time I've ever just washed my hair with water, so I'm anxious to see how it looks and feels later.
Cheers,
Jeremy
I don't agree, I have curly hair and it's always a pain to get it the way I want, and if I don't use shampoo my scalp will itch and get dandruff, I can't imagine myself without washing my hair for 4months, that's just insane!!! lol
Ppl that have straight hair are definitely blessed, but still some ppl complain about it being so lifeless looking and that's true IF you don't put anything on it, wax will make it look pretty good, more messy and stuff unlike curly hair which is very hard to tame and make it look good.
Well it seems i'm starting to take the natural approach to my hair, which is best. I used to laugh at you a bit how you only used natural conditioners and stopped shampooing indefinetely but now i am starting to realise the benefits for my hair.
It's the best method for curly hair. I wanna start taking great care of my hair so i can get it atleast mid-back length one day.
When i am working or doing manual labour i tie a tight ponytail with 3 wraps. My mum does it for me because she makes sure she gets all the hair in the ponytail and does it nice and tight. When i am at home or just chillin' i just wrap a loose, open band elastic over my hair. It seems to stay put for several hours unless i vigiourosly move my head. To tell you the truth i 'invented' this method due to my deficiency of being able to tie a tightponytail. I just can't do it. Curly hair has more thickness and volume so an open band is an option whereas with a straight hair it would probably just slide off. I also sleep with an open band, it keeps my hair in place and restranined but it doesn't put tension on my neck and is comfortable.
Alot of insight and great learned wisdom here for sure. Yes, it is the "Crazy Experiments" (that really are not crazy at all) that help ea. one of us know just what to do with our own hair-type. The reading material is a wonderful starting point, but then the individual has to fine-tune so to speak their own unique needs for the best results for their own hair.
I know your hair is curly and the Ponytail didn't appeal to you at 1st because of the way it looked. But much goes on in a year. A guy in a local music store w/curly hair now has the most fantastic looking tail...........and with curly hair! Gravity won out and all suddenly fell. It is a killer great look! (Presently at mid-back.)
I wear mine in ponytail a lot now as well. I find it looks neat and is also better when doing certain activities. I also think the longer the hair is the better the ponytail looks and I think thats why some people like them better then. When people try and put hair that is not longer enough into tails it looks silly and thats why I think some people dislike ponytails when they see this.
