10 months of growing; no maintenance trims yet, and me, somewhat unsatisfied with my hair. Due to my lack of satisfaction, I felt like I needed the cut. And judging by the appearance of my hair, it was necessary.
My father immediately drove me to the barbershop once I mentioned a hair cut. I blame myself. In my head I was absolutely aware that these people had no love for hair nor proper knowledge about it. I said "half an inch please". He took out his COMB, wet my hair, and just started shredding and ripping through it. It hurt badly. I had dry, thick, hair. I wanted to knock the crap out of this guy. I got up. Obviously I was angry, and they offered to try again, but I calmly refused. I ended up arguing with my father at the barbershop. We went home, my hair looked like it was in the very same condition, only 2 inches shorter. I now felt like nothing. I told my dad to get the razor and I had my head shaved in the garage.
I don't feel like myself. I guess the only thing I can enjoy is a sense of a fresh start. From now on, (or until I can find a long hair specialist), will be trimming my own hair. I've read Bill's work on being a longhair and I feel a little prepared. I've gone through discrimination and all that crap, so I guess it's kind of numb; unless a person REALLY pushes it. I'am going to purchase a really good set of hair shears from ebay, any recommended ones? AND please...I am SO sorry if this has been asked before by me (and I know it has, but I just get caught up, and forget) or anybody else, but WHEN DO I GET A MAINTENANCE TRIM? I heard every 6 weeks after four months of growth. I know it's going to be slow, but long hair has taught me patience.
thank you SO much for reading and sorry for the extremely long story. I swear, this place is the haven for long hairs. thank you.
We hear stories like this too often and I'm sorry you had to go through that. We will always get plenty of support from this community that's for sure. Firstly never go to a barbers that's for sure, and secondly only go for a trim if you know the place and stylist and is longhair friendly.
Keep it growing and good luck on your journey and do keep in touchg with us.

Well, I think everyone involved got emotionally OUT OF CONTROL! Major
decisions have to be done calmly and thoughtfully. This was like
a 'scene' from a bad film.
It's HAIR, people...take it easy...calm down.
Anyway, as you said: It's a fresh start.
Good Luck!
Hi Ein,
sorry about this "GPD" (greatest possible disaster), but, recovery is possible, and I hope I can offer some consolation. Besides, check out Jason's hair site ( www.geocities.com/stanleybey/ ), including his first two hair journeys. For a lot of people, it takes more than one "journey" to become a "stable" longhair.
The following advice is now self-evident:
- First, just avoid "maintenance trims" altogether, you don't need them AT ALL. Just let your hair do its thing - it'll look great in its own right, believe me.
- Second, whenever you're dissatisfied with your hair in the future, put a post on this board, but don't take any other action ;-) This an extremely effective way of keeping your hair growing.
- Third, even without hair (currently), you're a great person and a cool guy, you have all the right in the world to feel good about yourself!
Best wishes, good re-growth, and peace.
