Every one that has any interest in beautiful hair must be aware that hairloss may be just around the corner. Well, my hair was falling fast and I was rapidly developing a bald spot, however that has changed and I would like to tell you how: I use Rogaine 2X daily, Nizoral 2X weekly, Neurtogena T-Gel 2X weekly, and I take Avodart. Avodart is definitely the big boy concerning hairloss. I did Propecia for a year, but Avodart has worked much better. Now, my hair is thick and very full. For whom this may concern, I hope this helps. Jeff.....
Are you a member over at the Hairsite forums by any chance? If I ever start to lose hair through MPB (which may be happening now, I can't tell what's causing the thinness), I don't think I'd ever take something like Avodart/Propecia due to the DHT manipulation. I'd rather keep that natural. Isn't Rogaine inconvenient/messy with long hair?
Matt
I am a member at hirlosstalk. That's a pretty good resource, however I see my Doctor every 6 months. Rogaine works well, but it is a little messy until it dries. It can also make the hair a little frizzy, so I use Garnier Fructis Long and Strong leave in conditioner and that makes my hair super soft and very manageable. I have had no problems with Avodart other than the fact that it is a little pricy. I recently had a blood test which revealed no liver enzymes which should indicate no liver damage. Avodart and Propecia has a very good safety profile, however it may reduce one's libido at first, but after about a month things should return to normal as the DHT decreases and the testosterone level increases. Avodart should reduce DHT by over 90% and testosterone levels should increase by approximately 19 or 20% My libido has actually increased above baseline. Most bald men have lower testosterone levels and higher DHT levels than men with thick hair. DHT really serves no known purpose in the adult male, however it does enlarge the prostate and cause hair loss. I also believe that it causes the nose and ears to enlarge over time, but that is only my theory. If you notice many older men and women have larger noses and ears and I suspect DHT may be the cause since many women loose hair due to DHT. Also, keep in mind that the people at Nizoral did a clinical study and they claim that Nizoral shampoo works as good as Rogaine, although this was not an FDA supported study, they may be right since the Ketoconazole in Nizoral shampoo does seem to reduce DHT levels in the scalp, however a 90%+ reduction of DHT by Avodart alone should stop any further loss of hair. Furthermore, Avodart in conjunction with Rogaine should stimulate the regrowth of some of the hair that has been lost by the damaging effects of DHT. I personally have had excellent results over the last two years by using both Avodart and Rogaine. The trick is to start early, before hair loss becomes too advanced.
Does doing this also grow "back" the hair you have lost? or only prevents from further loss. Because i have just turned 18 a month ago and i have the hair loss issue as well and i must say it's the #1 concern...i've even considered going through that hair transplant procedure which will be thousands of dollars. I've also tried many products which have not really worked with helping my hair loss problem.
Rogaine is the main product used to grow back hair that has been lost. How long a strand this re-activated follicle can produce, I do not know. Propecia and Avodart are typically used to prevent further hair loss by combatting DHT, which attacks the follicle to weaken it. I think a few people experience minor regrowth with this, but nothing major. As for transplants - hair multiplication should be commercially available in the next 5-10 years, so if you have to resort to surgery I'd wait 'til then.
If you do suffer from MPB it'd be unwise to have a transplant at such a young age unless most of your hair was already gone. There's no point in having a transplant only for the other hair behind it to carry on falling out. Hope that helps some.

I have been using Rogain and I have seen results. As for hair that has regrown, it is more like baby hair, but it apears to be growing. Rogain does make my hair a little more oily. I really hope there is a break through in hairloss prevention and hair regrowing in the near future. I really love my long hair and would not be the same without it.
Wow, that sounds like a lot of work and money, but I suppose maybe worth it if it works for you. I'm just gonna be bald on top eventually and let the rest grow super-long.
I haven't heard of Avodart though. May have to look into it.
Thanks, bragi
