I know you get these posts a lot, but I hope you can help me out. i am intrested in growing my hair long. i have kept it less than 2-3" short for the past 6ish years, alternating between buzzcut (#2) and longer top spiked and short buzzed sides. i would like to grow it out like in the pictures i attached, shaggy about 4-6 inches. i have a few questions.
1. how fast would it be to get to this length (Factoring in normal hair growth a month/week and that its almost summer and it grows faster in summer)
2. how do i manage growing my hair shaggy from all the same length all over (should i get a pre-grow out cut [like longer top shorter bottom] to make it easier to grow out and try to limit the akward stage of growing)
3. when i was younger and had longer hair, my hair would always be straight. i wish that my hair would grow out to be wavy/curley, is there any product or way that i can make my hair wavy/curley from straight long hair easily?
4. i get dandruff and my head gets itchy when my hair gets longer, how should i avoid it?
thanks for your help, ive kept my hair short for such a long time, ive forgot what its like to have long hair and need to ask for help. the guys at my school have long hair, and it looks really good and i envy them for it. any reply or advice would be great! i can't wait, i just wish i hadnt gone to the barbers to get another #2 buzz like my parents told me to a few weeks ago!
me current on left, then pictures of the hair id like to have
Let's avergae .5 " per month. Those styles aren't long, not even medium length. For 4 inches of hair you would need 8 months of growth, which is a very short and easy goal to achieve. I have been growing for 18 months and i am still not satisfied with my length, i want more.
Alot of the 'shaggy' styles have side-parts and bangs/fringes. Probably best to let it all grow one length, unless you want a mullet.
Love what god has given you. I have curly hair and although i would much prefer straight hair at times i have learned to accept what i have.
My dandruff problem abated as soon as my hair started to grow longer. Scalp oils nourish the hair follicies instead of sitting on the scalp and drying into dandruff. This can only be achieved with length, otherwise where are the oils supposed to go?
Alot of school kids in Australia are sporting these 'shaggy mop top' lengths which is good. I wouldn't call it long hair but it is better than nothing i suppose.
80's Metal gave some very good answers. All you have to do is stay away from the scissors for 8 months to a year, and who knows, you may have some curl/ wave to your hair now. No use to get a pre-cut if you have just gotten a #2 buzz. Even if your hair is on the straight side, it will still look good longer. Now actually I have heard of something called 'Wash and Curl Shampoo', but have no idea how it works or if it is bad for your hair.
Lots of the guys around here have that shaggy haired look too. Good luck and check back here whenever you need encouragement or advice.
See ya later, bragi

I think the last two people summed up the questions well enough, so I'm just going to give you a piece of advice for growing your hair out in general:
Get a good night's sleep.
Believe me, it's important. For a lot of things, but it also definitely helps with hair growth. I know mine always grows best when I can get at least seven hours a night, and during times like now, when I'm getting three to six hours, it barely grows at all, and looks awful to boot, needs twice as much conditioner . . .
Anyway, get your zzz's. Your hair(and everything else) will thank you.
Good luck!
