Hello fellows =)
I was out for these last 4 days because I went to Minho, in the north of the country. I have a lot of family there and I got a lot of reactions on my hair... I didn't know, but despite the fact that the last time I saw them my hair was 11 months old they didn't know I was growing it lol =P So when I entered my aunt's house everyone shouted, "OHHHH It's Jesus Christ!!"... duh... oh well... then all I got from my aunt was just "Cut your hair, you'll just cut that HAIR!!! GRRR!" That really made me jump out of my shoes laughing and saying "Nop... "... Anyways, when I was going out of their place, my uncle just came to me and asked me when was I going to get my hair cut... I answered a simple and very passive "Never..." and you should see his face... he was like, "that can't be... if you don't cut it I'll do it myself!"... At that moment, for my biggest surprise, my mother interfered with a big "NO"... That made me so happy you know... she then pointed where I was going to grow it out (my mom thinks that when I state butt lenght I mean waist lenght =S ), and my uncle got so shocked he just had to shut up and quit the topic... furthermore, after this situation and during the four days, I only had nice coments =)
And... I found that a cousin of mine was also growing his hair out =) I haven't seen him for two years and his hair is currently in the middle of the awkward stage, more or less in the end of the neck (tough I seemed to me that it was slightly trimmed because there weren't much diferent lenghts in his hair's body...)
I had a great time and was very relaxing... to bad it was over =( See ya!!
Hi Joao,
I get alot of reactions and comments from family members who i haven't seen for many months. Fortunately these have all been positive or neutral comments so i haven't got this problem.
Glad to hear that your mum sticked up for you. Your uncle sounds very like a very ignorant person. You have beautiful long hair but they way they say "when are you going to get a haircut?" makes it sound as if your hair is overgrown and messy.
Don't they understand that men can grown their hair aswell, and if they take good care of it they can have a nice longer hairstyle?
Sounds like they are living in the past of mandatory crew cuts and short styles.
Just wait till your hair hits your butt, you will need to sweep their jaws off the floor - both in disbelief and awe :)
When I visted my relatives after about a year of hair growth (they hadn't seen me for about 6 months) I got nothing but positive comments which was pretty cool since I had been getting only negative ones from my immediate familiy. It took a year, but the first nice comment is definately a great feeling.
Well, glad you had a nice vacation, but sorry about the comments. They will get accustomed to you with long hair and will probably really like it next time you go up there. They probably just picture you as you have always been, and have a hard time seeing you grow up and be your own self.
It is good to that your mom stood up for you. That is very important to have your immediate family's support. I feel sure that you will reach your goal.
Tchau!
Ha ha ha...............sounds like you had a blast! It must have been a riot to see the look on your Uncles face when your mother sided with you and showed him how long your hair is going to be.
Good news for sure! :-)
Haha, that sounds about like me. Growing up in a private school my whole life with short hair (required! grr)... then all of sudden, after graduating...
"Well you see, I'm not going to cut my hair anymore... I'm growing it past my shoulders". Hah, the looks on their faces! Priceless. Just take it as a compliment, I did. It's the best you can do... people don't understand anyway.
Now I'm shooting for mid-back length though. =D
Ha ha ha, Go mum!
Thats a great story I'm glad your mum stood up for you!
Why is it always family that dish out the worst comments - I just dont know! Anyway...
Vacation to Minho $$$$, look on uncles face priceless...
Mogh
Oh, I love your mom's response. That's so pretty and motherly. Wish my mom would say stuff like that. :P
My family reactions are mixed, but in my favor, surprisingly enough. It seems that it's only my parents that really want me to cut my hair, and even they're beginning to accept it, even if they'd rather it in a ponytail than flying about in all its messy glory (well, hey, it's still glory).:P It'll be interesting to see if they're still supporting me in 5 years, lol.
We have the same length goal. I can't wait to see you reach yours and beyond, hopefully. You'll definitely get there long before me, but hopefully one day, we'll both be there comfortably. Best of luck to you, and can't wait to see the next awesome update!
Peace
Hi João David,
it's so great that your mother stood up for you, congratulations! By the way, if I get that right, most people in Northern Portugal are devout Catholic Christians - that means, comparing you with Jesus Christ should imply that your hair looks DIVINE ;-) which it does, of course. Great to hear that you had a happy Easter.
Best wishes,
Hans-Uwe
P.S. One other answer to the question when you cut your hair would be "when Easter falls on the December 25", or "when they open the under water railroad line all the way from from Lisboa to Rio de Janeiro" (provided there is no suburb of Rio called "Lisboa") ;-)
It sounds like it turned out to be a good time for you after all. And I just would have loved to have seen your mother and your uncle at that moment you described :) Hurray for your mom! That is such a great story!
