When I say 'grow out' I realise that that is a very subjective term, so lets perhaps play it safe and specify 'grown out' as at least 1 year of growth (essentailly without trims).
I'll start...
I have grown my hair out twice.
The first time for 32 months.
The second time (currently) I am at 26 months.
I've found the second time, awkward stage etc MUCH harder than the first.
P.S. It's good to be back on the board. I have been away due to Whooping Cough; although don't worry, I'm not contagious anymore!
First time for me, started way late at 42!
Hello Everyone,
To say, I have grown out my hair three times in my life:
December 15, 1974 until August 18, 1976, maximum length shoulder-length, with a few maintenance trims (march 1975, and October 1975, April 1976 (The one that my mom told me that I would have to return in a month the the barber ...) By July it reached shoulder length. August 18, I cut it "Disco Style", and was "permed", a disgusting hairstyle to my taste, really messed up my hair.
From August 18, 1976, I let it grow until February 18, 1977, and got a maintenance trim. Got another trim April 8, 1977, then on July 24, 1977 cut it "short", that is ear lobes showing, it was that the barber was a butcher. Got a maintenance trim in December, but kept my ears covered, and let it grow for good after that. It was by 1981 that it really got near my waist....
Funny remark: When I was 8 years old in 1967, and long hair on men was fairly new, my barber asked me if I was going to have long hair, and I told him "never".... It is an instance of saying "Never say Never" :)... The barber replied with somethint like "That is very wise, son, you know, long hair will make you bald".
Have a nice day,
Georges in Montreal.
This is my first time. Started the day after High School graduation, in 1990.

You look MUCH better with the long hair!

Thank you. I agree.
I second that!!! He definately looks a lot better with the long hair.
What a morphication. From a nerdy, conservative school kid to a scary gothic dude with waist length hair and a beard.
Yeah, freaky, ain't it? If you were to have told me, then, that I was gonna look the way I do, now, I'd have laughed at you.
hehehe
This would be the longest I've ever had it. Bit hard to determine when I started. The last time I had very short hair was early 2003. After that I'd get trims to keep a shaggy kind. I've still had the odd trim along the way.
Once, and never again.
.
For me its my first time as I started to grow my hair after finishing High School wayyyyyyyy back in 1980!LOL.Its varied in length over the years but it has NEVER been short as I couldn't even remember what I looked like in short hair its been so long.Mark
Grown it out for at least 1 year without trims? Just this time. I'd usually grow it and get then get it cut, around 10 month intervals. When I was travelling with a band in the mid to late '70s, I'd wear it collar length [the standard '70s look!]. Then I'd go long and medium for quite awhile. Then in March of '04, I said no more cuts!
25 months and growing...

Sorry 'bout the large pic size... forgot to resize it.

Once before, this is my second time.
I've had longish hair most of my life. "Beatles" mop-top or collar length during my school years. I let it grow longer after school. Didn't take really good care of my hair so it was never longer than mid back. In 1999 I switched to very short hair for a while. The last time I had short hair was until the age of 7 or so. I had forgotten what it was like.. June 2004, tired of short hair [yawn], I began my "return trip" to long hair, this time taking much better care of it!
Hope all is better with you Dean!

This is my first try at letting it grow long. My last cut was just before Christmas 2004. I had always given some thought to letting it grow. (49 yrs old this April) I found myself in a work place where the only thing that matters is your job perofrmance. I decided to let the hair grow. I hit the grungy stage last summer during family reunion. My dad gave me some strange looks all weekend, but I was determined to press on. My ears are finally covered and I can barely get the top in a half tail. looking forward to a proper pony tail by the end of the summer. The area around the temples is giving me a fit now as it not quite long enough to tuck behind the ears. Lots of gel and or hair spray right now to keep it out of my face. Its thick but very fine. I am giving thought to a gentle perm as soon as the pony tail kicks in. Just to give it some wave. Overall, I am glad I finally decided to take the plunge.
twice ...
1st in school - about 3 years ...
then the *censored* military service came - about 1 cm length for 8 months:((
started again after army - about 3 years now ...
so i can say from now i am getting into 'unexplored terrain' :)
i can't say the time exactly cos i don't remember when i exactly started to grow it out (about +/- 3 months)
greez,
ALH
Age 19(today!!!)
Have been growing for approx. 1.5 years or 18 months and my hair is about 10 inches long approx.
This is my first attempt at growing my hair long and i plan to stick with it indefinately.
I have wanted long hair for many years, but unfortunately, due to school restrictions and grooming policies i was unable to start growing until after i graduated. I plan to let my hair grow as long as possible. Mid back is acheivable at the least.
I'm 48 and haven't had short hair since I was 13, and never had hair shorter than an inch long at any time in my life, except maybe when I was born. You could say this is the second time growing my hair out without cutting it, but that I only went through the awkward stage once, although I stayed at that stage for about ten years!
Most of the younger guys, and some of the older ones, grew their hair out from shorter hair than I've ever had, or would ever have as long as there's breath in my body!
I've grown my hair out twice. Once for 2½ years, and now, where I'm at 2½ years again.
Twice,
1994 to 1995, then I caved and cut it. I was young and stupid.
2003 to present. Older, maybe a little wiser.
Only once - for the past 14 years:)(N/T)
This is my second attempt at growing my hair out. I am curently at 16 months. I am one of the older ones. I am just over 40.
The first time was back in the mid 90s. I grew my hair for about 11 months but had to get it cut due the job I had just obtained I needed a job at the time so I cut my hair. I thought to myself "I can always grow out my hair again" So here I am.
I've grown mine out twice. The first was for about 3 years. This time I'm comming up on year 2 (in june). It's just starting to reach past the bottom of my shoulder blades. I missed my mane and I will not be cutting again (minus the part I have to cut to keep it mid back length when I get to that), for at least 20+ years. It's a personal promise I will keep.
First time for me, growing since approx August 2005.
Mogh
I'm growing it out for the first time. It's hard to see me cutting it again, but maybe it'll catch fire or something.
Can't really say how long I've been growing it, because during the first year, I tried a few medium-length styles. Then, when my fringe went over my eyes around November 2004, I let it grow. Unfortunately I got too many trims since, but I'm just glad I didn't do anything drastic. At the moment I'm thinking 1/4 way down my back would be best.
I started 3 times to complaints LOL but on the third I let it go and its the longest it has gotten right now. Almost mid back.
I had quite long hair while I was young, about ear lobe length until I was 7 or 8. I then had it short for about 4 years. In high school, I'd grow it for a bit and then get it cut short again because of comments, this was probably a yearly occurance. I continued with that until I was 18, where I had a grade 1 crew cute for a 2 years. When I was 20 in 2004, I decided, I'm gonna grow this long no matter what anyone says. I'm now 27 months in and not had a single trim.
Might I add, I feel I've grown as a person because of the journey involved in growing my hair.
First time for me, now at 34 months
Jim
