in every anime i've watched and every manga i've read, the main character (or several of the main characters) has long hair;
Sailor Moon (Tsukino Usagi has the longest blonde hair i've ever seen lol)
Dragon Ball (Son Goku and everyone in his family lol)
Cardcaptor (Daidouji Tomoyo)
Pretear (Hayate)
Saiyuki (Gokyou)
Inu Yasha (i LOVE Inu Yasha's hair! lol)
has anybody else noticed this?
I've noticed that, too. Don't forget Hellsing (Hellsing, Integra, etc), Rurouni Kenshin(Kenshin, Kaoru, etc), Full Metal Alchemist(Edward and others, I'm sure), Full Metal Panic(Chidori, Tessa), Chobits, Fruits Basket(Ayame's gorgeous silver hair!. . . and others), and Yu-gi-oh(All of the villains have long hair, some of them very long indeed, and also Ishizu, Kisara, Mai, and Serenity).
Seita from grave of the fireflies always gives me urges to get my hair cut lol
Yup, although I wouldn't say most of the Saiyans had long hair - more like afros in a supercharged awkward stage. The Super Saiyan 3 and 4 forms, though...now we're talking.
And yes, Inuyasha's hair rocks so hard! I'm actually jealous of him, lol.
But most anime males have at least awkward stage hair, with some, usually the darker characters, having shoulder-length to almost any conceivable body length. I remember how shocked I was to see the length of Rei's hair in Beyblade when it went loose. Short hair is pretty uncommon, and it seems to mainly show itself in more "realistically" drawn animes.
Girls almost never have short hair, and in fact usually seem to have really big hair clips and ties, lol, metal stuff your arm could fit through easily. I have pics from an anime with a blonde girl that has hair all over the floor, but I'm not sure what show it's from.
The other thing is the amazing thickness most of these guys' hair have. Most people would kill for that in real life, lol.
Oh, and I was gonna add why I think that is... Isn't it along the same lines why the eye size corresponds to one's degree of innocence, so girls and children usually have the largest eyes? You know, your hair is something to be proud of, something symbolic. In lots of samurai/feudal Japan animes, longer hair is more expected, but then even in modern-day ones there's the same wild hair. For all you know, it's just more interesting to draw than plain old short hair. Whenever I try my hand at drawing a person, I know I love styling the hair. It's more time-consuming, but way more fun and rewarding in the end.
hehe i guess you could say that too. wouldn't you just LOVE to have the supercharged afro? lmao
but Trunks' hair was long and thick without the afro which i thought was sort of interesting.
Oh, yeah, I forgot Trunks, lol. He just got Bulma's good genes, lol.
I dunno, but I think Kenshin's hair kicks ass.

Ummmm, yeah. I have no idea what you guys are talking about. I am not a avid reader of Anime. All i know is dragon ball. I used to have a pencil box with Dragonball z on it when i was 10. lol.
But I agree with the previous poster abt europeans. You guys rock.
Cheers!
oh hehe from Tsukino Usagi is the main character from Sailor Moon--Sailor Moon. her signature hairstyle is 2 balls on the side of her head. her hair is actually floor-length when it's not tied up like this:

this is Inu Yasha. he's the main character of the show Inu Yasha. probably the most gorgeous hair i've seen on a male cartoon character lol his brother has equally gorgeous hair even though he's somewhat evil

Nice. I want to have hair like the 2nd guy (Inu Yasha). He has some killer hair. I dont prefer floor length hair though. :(

In Saint Seiya almost every male character has long or longish hair.
And, talking about saiyans, Son Gohan used to have that style with long hair specially in the back, and in some moments it was really long.

This also seems to manifest itself in Anima/Manga inspired video games. For example, I've been playing Dragon Quest 8 on my PS/2 for sometime now. The character and monster designs were done by Dragon Ball Z's Akira Toriyama. There are plenty of characters, including many of the NPC's that have some long hair. Naturally, as typical of this type of genre, the "bad guy", in this case, Dhoulmagas, has long straight hair down to mid-back, slicked back, and featuring a "Widow's peak"
Another example, the character Angelo has a really cool, mid-back pony tail:
