Hi to everyone, I have managed to regain access to a line for more or less the next week, before I go on vacation.
One thing I would like to ask Victor, is whether you have kept a record of all the messages ever posted to the board and would it be possible for people to have access to such old messages either through html pages or just downloading a text file for example. I am sure that many people would be interested to see the questions that have been asked before and also whether there are any changes that people get in reply to more or less the same questions. Perhaps (although this would involve more work) the messages could even be grouped together by topic.
Any thoughts or comments whether this would be pratical,
Cath
Cath,
Yes, I do have an archive of all messages. I am working on a method of keeping them in an organized form like you suggested. In the mean time, anybody wanting an archive of old messages, e-mail me, and I'll e-mail you a zipped archive of all messages to date.
Victor
Great news Victor.
Unfortunately I do not have an email program that can sensibly handle attachments, I can wait until you get the system you are developing up and running, although if you could find some way of posting the zip file so we could download it using our web browsers that would be great - is this at all possible?
Cath
Currently this is possible. However, eventually, I will run out of space. I'll post a followup when I have a zip file loaded on my ftp site.
There is now an archive available at ftp://the-light.com/pub/messages.zip. It is about 1.7 Mb, so download it when you have ample time (took about 10 min. to upload using a 33.6K connection). I will break it up into smaller pieces later.
I just loaded an HTML document linking the most frequently accessed messages. You can download it at ftp://the-light.com/pub/faves.html. If the page loads in your browser, save it as an HTML document from your browser into the same directory where you downloaded the messages archive. That is the only way you will get the links to work. Included are links to all messages accessed 50 or more times sorted in decending order by number of accesses. It is interesting to see which are the more populare messages.
Hi Victor,
thanks for putting up the file. I have downloaded it and dipped in and out. It makes quite fascinating reading and would be interesting to see if people would get different replys to the same questions today as they did when they first posted. There are a lot of messages though - you must be pleased with the response the site has got.
This latest analysis of the posts is also very interesting - I have only had a quick glance and hope to look at it more when I get back off holiday. You are doing a great job as site manager and I would like to say thank you for this.
Cath
Yes, the message board at least has really kicked off well. The rest, well, depends upon contributions, which, although I have a few unposted pictures, is lacking. I don't have much time to surf myself, so I'm relying on you guys to send me pics. I will also, of course, post pictures I take.
