Hey guys. I'm a 17 year old dude from Michigan.
I've been growing out my hair and keeping it relatively at this length for a few years now. Lovin' it.
I've recently stopped using any amounts of mousse at all. Used to use a small portion to smooth things out or whatever. Shortly after stopping, I notice a buildup of stuff in a couple spots in my hair. Turns out, my family has hereditary psoriasis or something. So I'm not sure if I have that and it's been flaring up because of stress and wisdom teeth surgery, or if it's residue from bad shampoo and conditioners.
I never really had dandruff unless it was from some kinds of gel when I was younger and had short hair styled with the stuff, so I'm not sure what's going on.
I hope I don't have the skin disease Psoriasis, but if I do.. well, I started just today shampooing my hair with that Selsin Blue stuff that my dad recommended. So far so good.
I actually had a psoriasis-like condition on my scalp, perhaps a pre-psoriatic (if that's a word, lol) state. I just ignored it and let my hair grow, and as my short hair went away, so did the flakes. I did make a better effort to shampoo properly, but I didn't use anything designed specifically for psoriasis/dandruff. I'd say to just leave it and it ought to go away, particularly if you decide to let your hair grow some more.
Otherwise, I was recommended a shampoo called Sulfur 8. I can't say it did anything, but you could check it out if you like.
I don't have dandruff. There was just a build-up of stuff in my hair. I'm guessing it was a thickened (for some reason) oil from my skin. Maybe I just needed to switch shampoos?
After using the other stuff, it went away. I'll check back in later in the week to report more on this. Thanks guys.
Oh, well if it's not better at the end of the week, you might want to invest in a clarifier. These are designed specifically to remove buildup, and are usually called clarifying shampoos/conditioners. The shampoo varieties are harsher than normal shampoos, so don't substitute them.
I picked up a bottle of clarifying shampoo at the store the other day. After using the Selsin Blue and then today, the clarifying stuff, the problem is gone. It must have been a build-up of nasty stuff.
Thanks for hearing me out, everyone.
Is it like (1 or 2 millimeter) dead skin that get away when you scratch it ?
I have that in some small areas of my scalp. It appears if I do not wash my hairs for 3 days. I have seen a dermatologist, she thinks it is a kind of fungus that is common. She gave me some a medicine, a kinf of pink shampoo call "Ketoderm". This goes better, but some months afterwards, it comes back, so there may be something else.
This might be a little psoriasis, I have some slight plaques under the arms.
There is no known cure for psoriasis (as it is not deadly, nor extremely common, medicine makers do not invest a lot in research), but if it is very slight like me, you can very well live with it (-: with some cortisone derivatives applied externally in very little doses (it is NOT contagious, it is partially genetic, partially due to the stress).
I am interested to follow the result of your research/experiments .
Anymways, you hair look great !

You should see a Doctor. Other than that you might try Nizoral shampoo, or a coal tar based shampoo such as Neutrogena T-Gel.
Nice hair.
