I have been reading these posts for a lttle while now, and have noticed the abundance of younger types. Are there any old fat farts like me out there who are growing long hair for the first time? The issues tend to be different; I'm not too worried about my parents at this stage of my life.
Maybe we could even have an O.F.F. thread for issues unique to us.
I would likely qualify as an old fart although I haven't begun work on my middle age paunch just yet.
The theme of the board isn't age specific so one would hope that your age isn't a rationale for exclusion from discussion.
42 and growing hair for over a year now. I noticed in late 2004 the deep feelings for wanting long hair started to creep back into me and for a few months I would grow my hair for a bit and then cut it, mostly out of thinking I still wanted a haircut but deep down no longer wanting one. Last March I took the bold step of stopping the haircuts and realizing the true self needed to come out once and for all...
I consider myself not old...just better...like fine wine. I hate to admit my age but will admit to being born in 1934. I am on my third journey of long hair. I had long hair, as a teenager, back when it was frowned on...in the late forties to early fifties...then joined the Navy at seventeen. I didn't grow it long again until I retired from teaching. I have grown it just beyond shoulder length...then cut it short as I enjoy the journey rather than the destination. I want to try and grow it for at least three years this time around. I would enjoy "talking" to other "seasoned" longhairs.
For some reason, I find that very interesting. What was the reaction like to long hair back then? I've seen very few pictures of long haired men from back then; most of them were Native Americans. Was it difficult finding work with long hair?
What happened to Foppy?
Based on my real name instead. I think this sounds a little more mature 'n' all too (if only slightly). :P
How old do you have to be to be an old fart? I'll be 60 in September.
Gasp !
I am a young 60 and there are a few on the board who are older. In my part of the world (SouthWest U.S.) where everything is casual, many older men with gray, white, salt/pepper and thinning hair are letting it grow out. Looks fine!! When ever I go to "town" for shopping or whatever, I am seeing literally dozens of men 40+ with long hair....and no hassle.
I work as a government scientist and there has not been any problem on the job. For safety reasons, I do keep it ponytail and secure when working around equipment.....and again for safety I must keep my mustache trimmed.
I am thoroughly enjoying long hair and wish Id done this sooner.

OLD? I refuse to get old,to me old is a state of mind
you are only old if you think you are old.
when I turned 50 I told every one I was 25 the second time around and this December I will be 26 the second time around.
I refuse to think old
2 bumper stickers I saw years ago [good words to live by]...
"I may be growing old but I refuse to grow up"
"Growing old is mandatory. Growing up is optional"

I'm an old fart that is 52 years old. I started growing my
hair when the Beatles started growing their hair. Low and behold
all these years later, it is still long
Parents are not problem, dad died, mom doesn't comaplain,
since I let it me known that now that i'm living in my own
house I wear my hair the way I want. If she doesn't like it,
then tough potatoes.
It's great to know I'm in good company; I'll be 53 this year, and am making the long hair journey for the first time. Thanks for the responses.
O.F.F. and proud of it!
Is that old enough to be considered an "Old Fart"?
P.S. recently turned 43
I'm 53 and have always liked long hair on guys. Prior to 1970, my somewhat conservative father wouldn't allow it. Since then and up until 2 years ago, I've had shoulder length hair on and off. In March of '04, I decided No More Haircuts! I just got back from a vacation visiting my parents. This was the first time they've seen my hair this long... and it probably won't be the last!

I'm 62, and will turn 63 in September. I started growing 10 years ago when I was 52. In life you only go around once, so you better do what you want before it's too late!
