Hey everyone, check this out: I used to work for Borders Book Group Inc. aka Borders, Waldenbooks and the like and I was told something very interesting one day. My manager was busy training a would-be manager for another store during work hours and I was busy ringing people up. After dicussing something about book prices, my manager came up to me and asked if he could have a word with me. He took me aside with the trainee and said that if he asked me to cut my hair or to put it up in a ponytail what would I say in response. I was shocked to say the least. Before I could reply he said that it is considered illegal for him to ask me to cut my hair or to put it up in a ponytail because it is considered gender discrimination. "Wow," was all I could say.

Cerberus, ten years ago, I ran into an issue where I applied for a job in Las Vegas(a very conservative city), where the owner of a local pub was eager to hire me. His issue was the length of my hair. I replied, "That's all right. I'll give a copy of this recording to EEOC." He gasped in shock and told me he was kidding. I worked for him for about 6 months, before I got a better job.
Ponytailing hair is usually not an issue with most employers I've encountered. It's your hair, don't cut it. Just keep it neat and they shouldn't squawk. But you may be under pressure to perform at a higher standard, if for no other reason, to see if they can dismiss you for incompetence.
Hey there,
I was told by my supervisor that all I need to do is keep my hair neat and I don't have anything to worry about. I always keep my hair tailed at work. One for neatness, two so it is out of the way when working on servers. :-) Plus I am valued employee, so I don't see my hair being an issue at my job.

That is wonderful to hear that you were told that and very rare to hear. Where do you live?
I currently live in California. To be a little more specific, the Sacramento area. I guess it's all those older hippie's running around, probably with businesses and the like. No doubt it was difficult for them!
