Well, unfortunately I live in the south US, where it's extremely hot and humid during the summer. It doesn't help that I have curly/frizzy hair. I want to start exercising, but am dreading the sweating that will cause. I'd prefer not to have to wash my hair everyday, is that a bad thing to do?
I usually wash my hair every other day as it is, and it's a quite lengthy process to get it completely done. I let it air dry, and then use my fingers (work my way up to the top) to get out the loose hair. My hair is nearly mid-back length (almost 3 years of growing so far).
Just wondering how everyone else deals with sweating a lot during the summer.
Well, I live in the South too, not unfortunately ;-)
Yes, it is usually as hot as four hells here in the summer.
I am of the attitude that, yes, I want to have nice looking hair, but not at the expense of everything else.
If I get sweaty and hot, I am going to wash my hair when I take a shower.
I wash it almost everyday or every other day anyway, but my hair is only touching the shoulders, and for right now, I really am not going too much longer. While many will say that it is best to wash infrequently, that is all well and good if it works for that person. Unless you are going for an extreme length, you should be OK with washing everyother/every day as long as you are gentle with your hair in other respects like combing, etc.
There are those here who never wash their hair, there are those who wash it frequently, who can say what is best except each one for himself.
Now, I will usually exercise late in the day, and then take the usual shower at night.
I have tried just rinsing the hair really well, it might work for you, but never has for me. I've always thought sweating was a good thing, getting the blood flowing to your scalp and cleaning out the pores. Good luck with it all.
I'm currently living in Iraq where we are already seeing 100+ temps. I exercise twice a day (what else am I going to do?).
In the mornings when I do cardio I end up drenched in sweat, literally dripping off my clothes.
Afterwards I shower and just rinse my hair out no shampoo. I only shampoo once every 5-7 days.
I've had several of the female Marines here comment that my hair looks better than their's.
Bottom line, exercise, drink plenty of water, and rinse yo0ur hair out afterwards. Shampoo as needed.
I would think it depends on how oily yer hair gets. I work construction and I live in Phoenix where the summers are BRUTAL. I only wash and condition once a week, but I wear a cap all day, so that keeps my hair flat (which I like) and keeps the dust off my scalp. My hair is not oily and is real straight, so I can get away with going a week w/o washing. Depending on what kind of job you have and if you can get away with not washing it so frequently, I would suggest wearing a cap. If your hair gets nasty from the heat and sweat, only rinse with Cold water and add some conditioner to soften it, brush thro and let it dry naturally.
Yes I agree that how oily your hair gets can dictate how often you should wash it.
But that has nothing to do with sweating. Sweat is just water with a little salt. No oil at all. Sweating doesn't have any effect on how much oil your scalp produces.
FWIW sweat doesn't stink either. What smells (BO) are the waste products from bacteria that grows faster in moist enviroments.
If you dry your hair after sweating (fluff it out, whatever) then the bacteria won't grow so much and smell.
You could even get away without showering after a work out, IF you dried off all the sweat and changed clothes.
However, most people don't like spending the day with a rime of salt on their skin and in their hair. It /feels/ grimy.
