Hello Everyone,
I came across an article that I found shocking in this day and age: A school in Liverpool suspending students because it imposed a new dress code with rules against long hair on male students. What is interesting, is that contrary to my youth, when such rules existed, parents side with the students, especially because, like me, they grew up seeing such rules being abolished. I had a dress code until Grade 3 and by the time I was in Grade 6, I saw long hairs in my class. No one ever made an issue of long hair in the early seventies. It was there, and part of daily life.
What is shocking is a place that tolerated long hair, decides to put rules against it citing gang problems. It seems that school authorities are too chicken to adress the violence itself, and put rules against bullying and apply a zero tolerance policy on the real issues. Instead limit hair length on boys, but not on girls. Other reason cited, is competition, a school with long haired boys has a negative image, (How about burning all library and text books depicting famous people with long hair, and the busts of famous people with long hair that may decorate the hallways, or libraries as well ;) ).
I think that limiting harmless differences, will remove the motivation to want to learn. It is more easy to suspend a person for an untucked shirt, or other dress code violation, than a violent bully. Will some places glorify bullies because their hair is short. Will short hair be a licence to be violent, just so long as you have a conservative look.
Have a nice day,

it works for the mafia.
Indeed, very stupid. The whole irony is that
so many academics and scientists in the past had long hair but they fail to recognise their hypocrisy.
They can't solve the problem of bullying by imposing stricter hair regulations. All they are doing is making the problem worse as more kids start rebelling over the new hair regulations and the real trouble makers and bullies get off the hook. So basically they are implying that all the bullies in the school are the students with the long hair? Prejudice and descrimination. What about the short-haired bullies?
This school system is fundamentally flawed.
Lol thats Pathetic to say the least I think they should constrate there efforts with other issues in school rather than guys having long hair !
This is being put into effect to force seven boys, aged between 14 and 16, to cut their long hair. Wow, what a "gang" of boys we have here. Are they "leading productive, law abiding lives"? There is nothing mentioned in the article that states that these seven boys are not leading "productive, law abiding lives". What about the remaining majority "gang" of boys with short hair? Are they leading produtive, law abiding lives? I bet that if I could conduct an investigation at this school, I'd probably find that more of the majority "gang" of short haired boys are causing more trouble than these seven long haired boys!!! The pathetic teachers are not doing their jobs teaching math, reading, etc. They are teaching sex discrimination!!!
Both pathetic and illegal, under EU law as I understand it
i heard about this story a couple of months ago. they seem to think that dress codes help curb bullying, but that's a myth.
when i was at high school, i got bullied a lot, despite there being strict dress codes. bullies always try to find the slightest characteristic that makes you stand out and turn it into four or five years of taunting and possible beatings.
im my case, it was because of my aspergers' and my big ears (which don't seem so big now), but i wasn't alone in being bullied at castleford high. a lot of people, some with disabilites were picked on, but the school did nothing about it.
luke
hoping to find the witless reactionaries who made my life hell and confront them
Sorry to hear about your rough school school years from bullying. You really don't suspect me as the type to be a victim of bullying. You are pretty big and tough and seem intelligent. Not the stereotypical nerdy/geeky type. I hope you have a reunion one day. To see the look on their faces when they see how long your hair is now and how tough you look nowadays.
Schools always have stupid policies in place not to deal with bullies, they do that so they can you know, assert their authority and let the students know that they are in control. I have been a target to bullies since I was a kindergarden, you know one of those kids with no friend at all and if anyone talked to me, it was for trouble. Then in middle school the bullying turned psychological instead of physical. Instead of them doing stuff to me like taking my stuff or whatever, they either messed with my minds (like pretending to be your friend and laughing at you in front of other kids when you arent around) or whatever. Telling a teacher or principal does no good, because either they dont care or dont know how to care. In fact alot of times if you told someone they would come back and do more things to you. I was glad to be out of regular school cause you know sometimes it felt like prison. College is usually better though.
That really is a pathetic rule, especially this day in age...i mean all our great grandparents have had longhair sometime in history and i bet even the hypocrites who put this rules have had in their lives long hair before. But as human nature goes, pick on those who are weaker and a minority to make yourself look and feel better. I seriously think these people have confidence problems about themselves and they try to find stupid reasons to inforce rules and bully around the minority...knowing they will surely win.
Just like a big man trying to beat the crap out of a little girl...that is very pathetic!
HELLO,
I HAVE LONG HAIR, DOES THAT MAKE ME A BULLY LOL
