Hey this is my first post...probably wont really post much though. But im wondering, my hairs pretty long like about 8 or 9 inches. But its real curly and fros up like in the pic. See, I always use a pick to fro it up major, and that causes a ton of damage to it ive found lately, and makes it frizz up a TON. even when my hairs unpicked out and such, its all frizzed up. And my hair is real short in the front im pretty sure cause its got split ends, as well as my other hair, but the front is covered by the other stuff. Basically, im thinkin i wanna cut it to a little more than an inch which sucks, but im thinking if i chop it and then grow it back with out using a pick or anything to damage it, it will grow back better. Im kinda thinkin the whole reason it fros now is cause of how much i pick at it now and in the older days when i dug havin the fro, now i kinda wanna see if i could cut it, then maybe it would fro up for a while because its real curly, but then later once its a good few inches the weight of the hair will cause it to go down. i read some other post and people said that would probably happen. by a year i think i could grow it all back, my hair grows fairly fast i think. Its always gonna be curly and kinda poof out which is cool I suppose, but id like it to be able to go down. Im curious to see what other people think about this, do you think i would be able to get it to go down if i didnt use the pick, and took real good care of it? cause as of now, ive frizzed it so much that its impossible without being really frizzy. sorry for making this message kinda long, but im real curious to see what people say. by the way, ive got a pic at the link, that was a little bit ago so its a fair amount longer. thanks for reading.
pic about 4 months ago.lol nice
see what you can do 80's if you applied yourself?
haha
thanks for the post mate
less brushing/picking is supposed to be better for your hair
I don't care much for afros, infact, i usually dislike the look. Your afro is one of the best i have ever seen. It is HUGE and really looks cool with your trademark Dimebag Washburn.
I can't really give you advice or assistance on what you are asking because i find your English skills very poor and i'm having trouble reading through what you said. Great afro. BTW, have you heard of an Australian retro rock band called "Wolfmother"? Well the guitarist has grown a massive afro in the last 2 years, almost as big as yours, and it really suits the whole 70s rock image they are flirting with.
Since this photo was taken(a few months ago) his afro has increased in both girth, size, diametre, thickness and every other concievable way! It is starting to get so big it looks ridiculous now!!!
yeh man i love the mother, i've got some latest fotos and i'm wondering when its going to inevitably drop
he must use something in it to keep it up..a hell lot of product which can't be good
The original post is basically unreadable. It is one impossibly long run-on sentence.
OK, the afro looks way cool.
That being said, to attain the afro look, were you doing things like back-combing your hair, teasing it up, or ratting it up with the hair pick or the brush, and using lots of spray and product?
If you were, then you probably did do some damage to your hair.
If it is just fro-ish because that is your hair type, then probably you are ok.
If it was me, I would probably try just normal hair care, washing, conditioning, and combing. If you are having terrible tangling and snagging and ripping problems when combing, then you probably do have the damage to the hair.
Why not then get a small trim, more or less an inch or so, of you do have lots of problems.
Your hair if it gains length, will then later start to grow downward and just look long and curly rather than an afro.
If that is what you are wanting to do? I'd certainly try several things before getting it chopped. Certain hot oil treatments and other conditioning products might just help you out too.
If you do need any pointers, check back here because there are lots of guys and girls here too who know a fair amount about hair care and will be glad to help.
Good luck!

It looks certainly close to dropping...i'll give it a little while until guitardude has overnight shoulder length locks
Sorry bout the post being like that hah. I was tired im an American so i do know english. But see my hair is picked like mad and that makes it really froed up, i used to really want to do it and have it go up. See, now it will go down but its totaly frizzed out and the fronts like 2 inches, which is wierd. So im still thinking the best decision would be to cut it then grow it back, and hopefully once it gets to a few inches it will start falling. About a year, my hair grows fairly fast like I said. Plus my dad says hell drop in some dollar bills for it, he hates long hair. By the way, the guitar not a Washburn, its a dean, and actually its not a dimebag tribute, just the straigt up ML 79.

If you don't cut it, or just get a small trim, then you'll have loads of hair this time next year.
Try treating it better. Hair sometimes seems to 'heal' itself. The conditioner-only method might suit you.
Hi guitardude,
your afro looks great - and your hair is probably going to grow even better if you use no shampoo, just conditioner. You also might try dimeticone / cyclomethicone (eg frizz-ease) to make it more manageable. Instead of a comb or brush (or before using a soft brush with wide gaps between the bristles), try some gentle finger-combing.
In any case, I don't think you'd need any cuts, trims, etc. Just be good to it, let it grow, and enjoy whatever it does next.
Best wishes, and have fun!
Hans-Uwe
P.S. One remark for all the others: Please don't pick on him because of his English, his long sentences, etc. Some of the greatest philosophers and writers use extremely long sentences (eg Hegel, Cicero, etc) that require some effort to decode. Plus, I think it's o.k. to use a bit of colloquial rather than literary English on a discussion board. I'm not a native speaker myself, and I can understand him.
I think your hair is actually more frizzy at the moment than curly, and the fact that you actually try to fro it up would seem to account for the fro itself. In other words, I think your hair would've fallen at least a bit more if you hadn't been intentionally using the pick on it.
I suggest you first stop use of all picks, combs and brushes and use your fingers to gently comb through your hair. Perhaps a bit of a trim might help to get rid of the damaged ends you might have.
Now then, you should try washing your hair with stuff like olive oil or jobaba oil for at least 20 minutes, just leaving it in your hair and then rinsing it out. Shampoo your hair like
once a week, and "wash" it with only conditioner every other week. Be gentle with your hair in all you do, and you should soon notice an improvement in it.
If you want to try washing your hair only with conditioner until it gets back to normal, don't use any conditioners with silicones. Use a natural/organic conditioner like Suave Naturals.
You may want to invest in some non-alcoholic gel for a while, or some sort of leave-in conditioner, and try putting jojaba oil on your ends after you bathe. Helps with split ends.
Keep us updated.
Peace
you shouldn't comb/brush you hair so often. you have big hair like mine. but at the same time it's still pretty tamable. the next time you wash your hair (once every 7-10 days) try to just leave your hair curly as your hair will become rather heavier when it clumps together for curls. you can also apply a bit of gel to keep it in place if you want to keep it in place
Right on thanks for the response. I dunno what im gonna do yet. By the way, my english is fine. I just wrote that when i was tired.

Yeah, I still don't see what the big confusion was about your English...
it's harder for some of us to understand than others depending on the region...there are like 20 different dialects in the UK, 10 in the US, and more dialects between Australia and New Zealand, and a few places in the Caribbean lmao
lol, I suppose that makes sense, yes. And speaking of the Caribbean...whoo! I'm from Dominica, and the English we speak there (informally) would get like an F- on a third-grade English paper, lol. And Jamaican, particularly because of the accent, is practically another language entirely.
oh? my sister spent 2 months in Republica Dominicana. she has a friend from there who helped her learn spanish fluently. most native spanish speakers can't tell my sister is not a native speaker lol and she somewhat looks like a latina hehe
No, not the Dominican Republic - I meant Dominica, between Martinique and Guadeloupe. It's a common mixup, but my island, besides being much smaller than the Republic (we're 29 miles long, lol), speaks English as its main language and some Creole as a sort of side language.
I can speak whatever Spanish I learnt in Spanish class, lol, which is enough to be defeated by the first Puerto Rican I speak to at the airport (no offense to any on this board, but they speak so fast! lol). People also mistake me for being Latino sometimes, particularly when I have a ponytail; people also mistake me for a Latina/Amerindian/girl in general sometimes when I'm clean-shaven, lol. I can't win...
oops! my mistake lol i just looked it up on wikipedia and it showed me a picture of the island.
don't feel bad about the mixup though. most people mistake me for being an east-african arab (although i do have some east afrcan-african/arab heritage) as well as being an amerindian (which i am lmao)
