Okay, here's the deal: I have shaggy, thick, and somewhat curly/wavy hair just past my ears. My parents are both cool with it, but since I'm looking for a job, they recommend getting it cut. I've only been growing my hair for 6 months, and its been about the same length/style for about 1 and half, so if I cut it, my hair will be about the same length at the end of summer as it is now. However, though short hair is tempting because of the rising temps and job interviews, I don't really want to get it all cut off and start over. But I'm also not too fond of the curls at the tips of my hair. So I was thinking of getting it styled and just having the bulk thinned out so its not so thick, and I also would like my hair straightened.
>As a matter of fact, just two days ago I got a new job at the ACT office building near my house. I had my long hair intact and facial hair. I still got the job (and noticed at least 3 other longhairs either working there or applying). And, I live in a VERY conservative, backwoods town in east Tennessee.
You shouldn't have to cut your long hair to find a job. There may be a >few< prejudiced employers who only want sheared sheep (nothing against short-haired men if they >want< to have their hair that way, as opposed to cutting it out of conformity), but I think they're in the minority.
The curls at the tips of your hair you mentioned, those will probably go away with time. As your hair gets longer, gravity will stop the ends from curling as much. Getting your hair "thinned" is probably a bad idea; it'll put different lengths in your hair, which is something a lot of members here try to avoid, since hair that's mostly one-length is easier to manage than hair with different lengths.
I'd suggest just combing neatly and maybe using some gel or hairspray to "tame" it. If it's long enough, try putting it in a ponytail. That way, it'll stay out of your face, and you won't have to cut it.
Well, I use hairspray, but the curls still happen. Its weird because my hair is straight up until those points.
I just came back from and interview and everyone there had long hair, including the supervisor. I was hired on the spot.
wow, you're lucky. Here in California most people have short hair. I don't knwo, short hair just make life easier, it looks pretty good and its easy to dry and style.
I just did my hair a different style and it looks pretty good, kind of like John Heder's normal style (not Napoleon Dynamite style). But anyways, this is about as long as I want my hair, and it didn't take that long to grow (a little less than 6 months), so I was thinking of cutting it short once a year when summer rolls around, then let it grow out again, and get it trimmed to kepp it the length I have now. By the way, I found a way to control the curling, I get my hair wet, towel dry a little, and as ti air drys I constantly put the curls back into place, and once its compeltely dry they're straight.
Not everyone wants waist length hair so if you are happy with your current length and don't wish to grow any longer, then that is best for you. It is ultimately about what you want and what makes you most satisfied. Good luck with your job interviews and i don't think that 4 inches max of hair is going to cause any upset with the employer. Make it neat and it should be fine.
Don't cut your hair out of anticipation of what an interviewer might think. For all you know the interviewer might give you an edge up because of your long hair.
I wouldn't cut my hair just because of an interview. There are other things like the summer heat, dissatisfaction with longer hair, etc.
