hey all
I just got back from my first proper metal concert!!!!
Needless to say it was awsome....opeth at brisbanes best place to see a concert The arena
i expected it to be really annoying but it was great there was only i tiny mosh at the front and most of the other people there where older people/vampires
The band where brutal They played soe of there staple songs (deliverence and ghost reveries stuff) witch really got the crowd going...they also played some really obscure old songs includeing the 2nd opeth song they wrote. another surprise was mike pulling out a 12 string to play closure.
The band ended on leper affinity with a significant rise in volume....when they left everyone chanted mikel and OPETH until they came back on and played a cover of "soldier of fortune" by deep purple i nearly lost my hearing when mike sang the last refrain so mich hlouder and more beutifully than on the original. They then ended on Delivence (for real this time)
Mike was really funny during the concert includeing when he added sarcastically "now that where sighned to roadrunner where a Nu-Metal band and we dont care about you or music, just money and chicks" and another time when he got everyone to sing "happy birthday Greg the D@CKHEAD!!!!!" to greg the 60 year old (clearly actually not 60) sound manager who nobody cares about but well just pretend......Greg then came on to switch mikes guitars and started strangleing him with the strap.
Overall it was an awsome experience from my favorite band and in my opinion the led zeppelin of metal.....
! Got a shirt and broke my glasses as well!!! yay!!!
sounds like an amazing gig - wish i was there!
i've seen them twice - awesome both times :)
can't wait till they play download festival in a couple of months

Hey,
I saw them in Sydney last Tuesday, where they played at Luna Park!
Words cannot describe how awesome it was, and I'm usually a pretty good wordsmith.
Maybe it's because they're in my top 3 favourite bands, and because they are incredible live?
And you're right, very, very funny!
In fact downright hilarious at points, especially as the humour on Mikael's part didn't seem forced at all but completely natural.
To take but one example, Mikael asked everyone in the place (which was according to him the biggest crowd, at 3000, that they had ever played in front of) to do a growl. Howver he didn't like our longish growl and demonstrated how to do a short growl.
So we ALL copied that, and then came the part that I find a classic...he says" "Ok, now just the girls"...
hearing those softer, more feminine grunts, yet still _____ metal grunts phrased in the context of an old-fashioned sing-a-long, was just fantastic!
Personally I was bit frozen at the event, as I was wearing my usual 'metal gear' (black: socks, shoes, jeans (tight) and singlet). Waiting in line by the harbour for 35 minutes in that bloody singlet was a real 'metal moment', especially as everyone else (99%) were dressed to the nines.
I did go home with a v.cool Opeth wristband to keep me warm though.
Finally, on Thursday night I saw my other top 3 band: Korn! It was equally amazing as Opeth, albeit on a different level.
Perhaps its the fact that thier songs are shorter, so their set list was much longer, and it was like 'Man! It's one hit after another' + I've been a fan of theirs for a bit longer than I have been of Opeth + I realised you can 'dance' as well as headbang to Korn-which I did, even though I don't generally dance!
Just amazing, and a very special week.
Btw, it was great having long hair again for these concerts :-)
Haha, I'm just glad my leather coat is a part of my metal gear in winter, so I'm never too cold while waiting.
Sounds awesome, dude. I love Opeth's almost symphonic take on metal - it's not just a rhythm, it's a whole dang song, and you go from a slow little dance thingy to a full-out headbang as they go from soft to heavy flawlessly. Gotta love it.
Just one question, though...vampires? I know there are people that dress like them, people that are or believe themself to be vampires (energy-draining/psionic or blood-drinking/sanguinarian are the groups I remember)... Is this what you meant?
nah i was just jokeing...i was referring to gothic type dress yunno all the black makeup and stuff.......pretty cool people mostly, they where the most laid back ones there
Ah, gotcha. Cool. I know a guy at college like that. He has fangs he puts in and everything. Gives some interesting reactions.
I wish I could go to a real metal concert. At one time Dream Theatere was coming to Taiwan to play and they were sold out by the time I found out about it, and I had to work so couldnt go anyways. But the ticket was like 100 dollars and some of my church friends went there as well. I dont know, maybe if they have indie rock shows or something I might go so I dont have to pay an arm and a leg for it... but thats a rarity in Taiwan, most "indie" (or not) concerts in Taiwan I am able to go to is some pop concerts in a mall or something, and I wouldnt go there even if someone paid me a million bucks...
pop music is more popular than I thought I guess... one thing about pop music is it's popular for like 1 year max then after that they get replaced by someone else then no one's ever heard of them. No one could remember who was the most popular star in Taiwan 10 years ago. Rock music seems to live on, I mean people still know Led Zepplin and Metallica and you know especially Hendrix... one good advantage to rock/metal type music.
Well, that's just it...pop music is popular music (literally), and what's popular today often isn't what's popular tomorrow. Many singers end up being one-hit wonders, and since music producers are rapidly becoming more important than singers/vocalists for this kind of music, it just takes one good beat to be famous, at least until the next big beat comes out, and then a couple more and you're nobody.
It's sad, but I know a lot of people that really exemplify this. They only listen to new music, and either delete or just mass-store away all their "old" stuff. The problem with this is that "old" to them is often music that's been out for a week or so. I suppose it goes on until their computer is out of space and they have to delete all the "old" stuff.
Opeth are always awesome. I've seen them twice now and both times were great experiences. It sounds like Mikael was humorous as usual. :)
Cool stuff, hope it won't be your last ;)
I've seen Opeth twice now, and would go again if they came near me again.
Unfortunately being danish, I don't catch all of what he says in swedish.
Excellent! Glad you had such a good time. I saw Opeth back in Feburary at Town Hall, it was an amazing show! They are a great live band, IMO.
