A month or two ago, one of the regulars on the board posted a link to software that will re-size large digital photos. Does anyone remember what it was?
Try this. It works very well.
Bill's photo resizing siteVictor got a new server earlier this year, and it can resize your photos when you post. It will handle photos just as large as the resize program on my site. The reason my resize program was put there was because Victor's old site did not have resizing available. Now, you don't really need to use my program.
The reason I left the resize program there was because the guys at gaylonghair.com still need it. That site is running on an older server that does not have resizing available.

It would be simpler not to take large digital photos in the first place. Digital cameras have size/quality settings. You only need megapixels (large) if you intend to print them. For on-screen only, the smallest setting is just fine.
I agree to an extent. If you're taking a picture you know is just for online use, sure use the smallest setting. But if you're taking pictures at random, you never know which is going to be that awesome pic that needs printing.
That's why I always shoot at maximum resolution. Also allows me to crop (can give an effect like added zoom, when it's only to be used online).
In a perfect world that is indeed the case but as Mesmerized rightly pointed out, we don't always know when that printable scene will avail itself and the act of changing settings with most cameras is enough for many photo opps to pass. Besides, many folks may just prefer to take big pictures. :-)
Many digital cameras come with software to edit images- including resizing. There is also other software out there that will make images smaller. A Google search should provide a nice selection to choose from. Perhaps a permanent link to the photo resize utility could appear at the top of the page?
