I have very thick course hair, and I have been going with a look as follows, shaved sides, shaved back of head, trimmed on top, thinned out on top, but I have bangs about 6 inches long, they are naturally wavy, but I use a straightener, and I happen to love the way it looks! here is a picture below of the current style, I have been going with, it may look a little odd, but hey im going for a rocker type style, I was wondering should someone with my type of thick coarse hair get layers? it seems like when I try to grow my hair out, it looks terrible, cause it bunches up, I end up looking like a beatle...and it is so thick that it would be pointless to grow out, cause I wouldn't be able to swing it around anyways.
Hey man
ok i'm sure you know this already but you can only get layers at a decent hair length, not bald back and sides lol
you said growing your hair out looks terrible
that's the akward stage
once your past that your fine and it'll look good
trust me my hair looked dodgy for the first few months and still does look a little akward but has been getting noticably better as the months progress
my advice? stick it out...and when your at shoulder length, mid back or whatever THEN ask yourself would it better in layers

I absolutely love long hair, but... I wouldn't change the way you now wear your hair. It looks so amazing! Of course, I think you'd look good with long hair too, only not in layers. You probably should experiment with more short hair styles first (like a mohican) and then grow out your hair.
I would keep your hair on top/in the front exactly as it is now, and simply add a lot of length (around 2-3 years growth) in the back, so that you would have either an awesome mohawk or a mullet (depending on how you look at it).

What Happened to it whats it suppose to be !!!! Do you have pictures of the back to, Are you just growing your Fringe/Bangs long then instead of growing it all long

I am a bit intolerant and quite ignorant when it comes to unconventional hair styles like these, but can i just say how much it actually suits your face. It is definately not long hair and having 6 inch long bangs won't even pass for it but it does really look cool on you. It gives you a cheeky boy look :)
As someone stated, you canno't possibly get layers when you have less that a few millimetres of hair :) There is simply no hair to cut, unless you want to cut skin :)
I know you have thick, wavy hair and yes it is a PITA(work it out urslef) to grow but you just gotta tough it out and get through the awkward stage and let it grow no trims for minimum 2 years. My hair can be a real pain to maintain and it is very curly and gets dry and lots of dead ends and stuff but i would never think to cut it off now. I am hoping that it will get more manageable/less akward and look better/healthier with more length. What is your hair goals?
I know that you love Sabbath and you stated you want long hair that you can "swing around" at rock concerts. In that case you want looong hair which means minimum 3 years growth, no trims.
I would also use the hair straightener sparingly. Straightening is addictive, i did it once and i often get the urge to do it more and more because of the nice quick results.
At Opeth and Korn, my hair length was perfect for headbanging, at 2years and 2 months!
Although I'm sure it would be even better by the 3 year mark.
Not bad, that's quite an original style. If you just let your hair grow, then yes, it may well look odd for a while. But eventually it'll look excellent.
Layers can look good, but they tend to grow out funny and make hair tangly.
