I'm growing long hair for the first time.. been at it for about 5 months. I've got two problems:
a) My hair's been combed in the "good boy" style for nearly two decades, so I find it really hard to get it to stay pulled back.. it doesn't stay for more than a day. I don't like using Gels. I've used thick hair oil.. it works to some extent.. but not much.
b) My side-hair, the hair that grows in front of the ear at the sides (above the beard) is curling up and sticking out to the sides. I suspect it might be because I tuck it behind my ears, but if I leave it alone, it looks awful. The hair vertically above it (on the sides of the head above the ear) are sticking horizonally out too... it looks really funny. Looks like a devil with small black horns. ;-)
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks
You are in the beginning stages of the so-called "Awkward Stage" in which the hair will pluff all out as you have described. This is normal, and all part of the journey to being a Longhair. When long enough, sheer gravity comes into play and by the end of 2 years just about all seems to fall into place and looks great. But in the meantime, there is just no other way to get from point A to B without letting the hair grow on its own. A "Trim" to make things look better will stall the whole process and it will take much too long to have long hair.
Umm.. thanks. Wish that this "awkward stage" got over soon.
My bangs are so accustomed to being swept sideways, that they refuse to be pulled back.. even if I let it dry after washing my hair with water and setting my hair with fingers, the bangs go sideways and then curve to the back. So they aren't actually pulled back and it looks foolish.. if you get what I mean.
Thanks for the quick responses though, I didn't expect any so soon. :-)

I'm at that same stage. I have really curly hair anyway so I bought a hair iron. It helps some but there is still a bit of a "wing".
Good luck, I've been trying to grow my hair out off and on for a long time but work kept getting in the way. I'm at about 5 months too.
Good Luck
