Hey guys,
I'm just wondering. How exactly do I tell if I have split ends? If I posted a close-up picture of my hair ends, would you be able to tell?
I ask because it's been about 5 months since the last trim. In 05, I had about 3 trims I think (but each of them were about 1/4" - 1/2" off), because back them, I thought it was best to get somewhat regular trims (yes, yes I know--but this was before I came here!!). So I had trims about every 4-5 months.
But now, I'm shooting to just not have trims as much as possible. I think this really is the best idea--you guys are smart. ;)
However, the ends of my hair feel a bit dry in comparison to the rest (I really need to get some of that jojoba oil), and I get tangles at the ends quite easily. I also notice somewhat shorter hairs in my comb/brush. Is this because the hairs are breaking? I comb very gently and don't really feel any breaking. But when there are split ends, do they break off?
If anyone can answer any of these questions, I greatly appreciate it. =D
Hi Peg,
a few years ago, I had that "split-ends" problem. I used to trim from time to time, but I found that applying some dimethicone/cyclomethicone product would keep these ends from getting worse, and eventually, they disappeared. Instead of these silicone compounds, Jojoba oil or other oils may also do the trick.
One cause for split ends may be "brutal" disentangling the ends by pulling a comb through, and most kinds of oil would make disentangling a lot easier, thereby saving the hair some "split-ends generating stress".
You also could use some sharp scissors to cut off split ends, using the "search-and-destroy" method. It's a lot of work, but it keeps you from cutting off too much.
In any case, you could take some small hair strands and look at the ends with a magnifying glass. If you want to post a picture, make sure that it shows single hairs.
On your avatar, your hair seems lo look just perfect - and you look phantastic with it.
Good luck, and happy growth,
Hans-Uwe
Hans - you have mentioned this product several times in the past, as a treatment for split-ends. I think i may buy a bottle and give it a try. I take good care of my hair and deep condition etc, but i still have dry hair and the ends are far from good, infact they look pretty dry and 'dead', a problem i have had for a long time. You said that it comes with a label such as "anti-frizz serum" or something similiar. The next time i am out shopping i will keep an eye out for it.
Infact , my conditioner contains silicones, maybe these dime' and cyclometh' are already in what i am using! I should check the ingredients. I also use a natural conditioner which is silicone free, i use both , it just depends on what my hair needs and if i want to rinse or leave in and so on.
Yeah, whenever I get alot of tangles (especially in the morning) I try to use my fingers to get them out. I dunno, I'm just not sure if getting a very very very slight trim is worth it. I guess I'm still debating the whole thing, haha.
But you say that conditioner helped your hair alot and made the problem go away? I'm definitely gonna start trying some of this stuff. =)
