Ok im pretty angry about this. My algebra teacher told me to stop playing with my hair, all i was doing was running my finger through a knot i felt. So i stopped "playing" with my hair. Not five minutes later, I shook my hair and sweeped the bangs out of my face, a move I have been doing for the past 3 months. She starts yelling at me about how disgusting it is for me to shake my hair out because I'm getting dander everywhere. Then she deals a huge blow below the belt, she told me my hair was disgusting and girly and i needed to cut it. I wash and condition my hair THOROUGHLY every day (its still that short) and she told me it was disgusting. And further proof that my hair is clean, after class every girl in the room came up and told me to not cut it, that they loved my hair. Then later that day my principal came up to me in the hall and said my hair was reaching its length limits and should be tended to soon. I said "show me in the dress code where it says a guy cant have long hair." and he walked away. I read the dress code through and through and there was nothing about it so i grew my hair out.
Even if they tell me to cut it, I'm not because I only have 3 more weeks at that school. Sorry for this, I just needed to blow off some steam. Thanks for listening.
Lurker here. Thought I'd comment because this post is really profound.
People can be real @$$holes. This just goes to show how many shorthairs know so little about proper hair care.
I never got any compliments about my hair before I started growing it out. Now I get them everyday. There's no logic in cutting your hair to look like everyone else. With long hair, people automatically remember you. People automatically think you're an interesting person. I'll never go back, no matter what.
Since this is my first post, I'd also like to say that everyone here is really cool and inspirational. I'm currently at 14 months, but I'm going to wait until at least 24 months before I post a photo, because I love suspense.
Grow your hair, like nature intended.
Welcome to the board Adam.
You obviously have more patience than I do if you're willing to wait 2 years before posting a pic. I obviously didn't have that much patience, since I've posting pics here since I started growing :) I enjoy the positive comments, helps the hair grow I'm sure :)
Hi Noah,
I agree, it's totally ridiculous - I'm surprised they try that nonsense just to satisfy that algebra teacher. I almost suspect that she has a mental problem, and the principal doesn't see a chance to hire a replacement for her... ("needs to be tended to soon" might be his way of backing off without embarrassing that algebra teacher). In any case, your anger is justified.
Just as you said, stick it out for these three weeks - I'd be surprised if they had any real handle to force a hair cut - that shouldn't work without a written policy - well done on your part!
I hope your parents side with you - or were they a problem, too?
Good luck, and stay cool...
Hans-Uwe
P.S. As someone who is interested in history, in what state or country is that "History Park" with your school? ;-)
"If I have to cut my hair, you have to go back into the kitchen. Sound fair?"
Bam. All you need.
Nice, very nice rebuttal. I may have to adopt it for my own use. =)
It would instantly remind this woman that times do indeed change and that her opinion remains valid to the extent of her own perception. Alone it does not give her the permission to impress her own thoughts on anyone else.
heh...I read stuff like this and sometimes wonder what millenium we're in
Stay in school, man. The correct spelling is "ridiculous."
I realized that after i posted it. I realized the root is "ridicule" then it goes to ridiculous. If all your going to do is flame, dont reply please.
Oops, please forgive me for using incorrect english, since everything I say is being graded. The past statement should have been: : I realized that after i posted it. I realized the root is "ridicule" then it goes to ridiculous. If all your going to do is flame, """Please dont reply."""
I thought that you would take it as a joke, as we all make typos. Sorry
Not very supportive man, sorry to say.
Keep it long, the girls love it, only 3 weeks...party time bro!
Just consider the source: a couple of "well educated Morons!" And alas, there are so many more out there. And the more educated some of them get, the less common sense is present. Instead of sticking with the subject, "nibbyness" prevails. Truly a sad commentary.
Please tell us what country, what state or porvince, and whether your school is privaate or public.
Public School, Louisiana. Nothin special on the school, another school around here has a rule on hair but they are a private school. Sorry to leave this out.
"And further proof that my hair is clean, after class every girl in the room came up and told me to not cut it, that they loved my hair."
As is shown proof there, as the years go by, people are becoming more open minded in our society...atleast that's what im looking forward to. I don't know if anyone knows this about me but i must state it... not only do i grow my hair, but i also sometimes wear make up and even skirts at times just because i like the look. I did notice that the older people all find me discusting(even my own family), but the younger people(almost all kids) actually love the way i look and think it's Unique. I remember there were times where a mother and her daughter/son would see me and the mother would look at me with a discusted face as if i am not even a human being, but her children would think i am cool and some even wanted to take pictures with me like i am some sort of famous person or something, which i found funny and yet cute at the same time.
But my point is that as time goes on people change, and people need to get "used" to an environment to change...all the elders who haved lived through the 40s - 60s have not been accustomed to seeing too many longhairs and therefore they find it "ugly"...but as time goes by people will get used to it again. Long ago everyone loved longhair back in the Rennaissance and Midieval times(my favorite time periods)...and i bet no metal lover has any problem with long hair.
Hope i could help boost your self-confidence a bit.
Keep growing!

After hearing incidences like this, I wonder where the "Street of Equality" is? "Both sexes are equal" and "There are no differences between the sexes". These statements were made in the 1970's when I was a teenager by the same sex that called men "Male Chauvinist Pigs, sexist, and big egoed". Is this 21st Century thinking by the same sex that want men to live in the 21st Century? And their most recent statement: "I don't want to follow tradition"!! If this is the case, why do boys and men have to follow tradition? It addition (No pun here), it surprises me that an algebra teacher doesn't know what the "=" sign means when it comes to the "Street of Equality". But then again, I remember back in the 1970's that my high school female algebra teacher was crabby also!!!! What is it with female algebra teachers that makes them this way? Maybe it's teaching algebra!!! Grin and bear it!!!
Just as they did to Rene Portland, a Penn State Lady Lions basketball coach, who was fined $10,000 by Penn State for creating a "Hostile, Intimidating, and Offensive Environment", this algebra teacher should also should receive the same fine!!!
Noah, I think you are showing quite a bit of restraint by labeling that teacher merely "ridiculous"...several stronger adjectives come to my mind.
Here's hoping those next three weeks pass quickly (and uneventfully) for you.
You've already got a headstart (no pun intended) on a fantastic image...keep it growing!
my business (men's grooming/imaging) websiteThat's horrible. That teacher had no right to say that to you. Just goes to show that athority is still comprised of people, and people must EARN respect. That sort of comment from a teacher, or anyone, no matter who they are over, is a cause to lose respect for them. I'm sorry you have to go to such an intolerant school.
I am proud of you for standing up for what you believe in.
That is something that I must aspire to build for myself more and more. - Reinhart
