First off, hey everyone. I know this isn't long, long hair compared to most of you, but it's long to me. I was wondering how I should go about asking my hair stylist on getting something like this. How do they do it? I want a longer look like this, instead of just the shaggy, punkish-rocker look. You know what I mean? Here's the pic:

It is generally accepted around here that 'long hair' is at least chin length/ a years equivalent of growth OR at the very least, more than 'shaggy'.
There are various psychological and socio-cultural factors associated with this process (as it relates to men).
That is why people such as yourself who are INTENDING to grow their hair only a little bit (your GOAL is what separates you from those with even less hair than that of your goal pictures, as they are intending to grow long hair) aren't likely to find much help from our community here, even if those styles are long for you personally.
I only say this so that you can find more appropriate help/advice elsewhere.
That said, firsts tep is to print out a copy of that picture and show it to your stylist.
Also, maybe say that you 'want layers' so that it looks 'full' on top, but 'cut into the neck' at the back.
The people on the Men's Long Hair Hyperboard as a rule tend to stay away from scissors generally speaking, so I hope my advice isn't too rusty as it relates to you!
Thanks for the help. I realize that this is a Long Hair board, I just couldn't find any other board that looked active, so this was my best option.
Which one?? Pitt or Redford??
Pitt. I have gone to another forum to try and find a response, but no luck so far. My hair isn't very long yet, not close to Pitt's in the picture. I don't know if I should go in and get it trimmed and show her the picture, or let it grow more and then go in. I also don't know how to explain it to her other than showing her the picture.
