Jonathan Schwartz, 40, was promoted to CEO of Sun Microsystems (Fortune 500 computer company) when the previous CEO resigned.
Jonathan has a blog: http://blogs.sun.com/roller/page/jonathan?entry=the_geeks_are_in_charge
Check out the 'P.S.' section of this post. He links to the debate about whether or not he should keep his ponytail.
"I'm the guy in the center wearing the tie - and before you ask, no, the dress code isn't changing (and if you were going to be in a photo your mother would see (not this one, she doesn't read my blog), you'd wear a tie, too)."
So, if someone says your ponytail isn't "professional" enough - is the advice from someone more "professional" than running a 31,000 person, $12 Billion company, while earning a $1 million salary?
Cool photo. That is rare to see a ponytail as chairman of a corporate company.
You change your name then ???????
We need more people like this to show that most longhairs are not Hells Angels like types. This shows how long hair can look clean and neat in a professional type job.
I've worked in the software industry myself and generally people don't care about what you look like but how you perform and there's no problem with long hair. I hope more industries relax their attitudes toward appearance and instead focus more on how the person performs.
I think it's critical for guy longhairs to put some effort into keeping their hair looking it's best at all times, and that may mean taking more time to style it in the morning and make sure it stays nice throughout the day, the way women have always dealt with it. Also, I hope that eventually there will be more acceptance of varying styles for men as it is for women. Why should a guy only have a choice between wearing his hair down or in a ponytail? When a woman with long hair can change her style on a daily basis by braids, updos, adding curls or straigthening her hair, why shouldn't guys be able to do the same thing?
Absolutely! I hate football and have no opinions on David Beckham either way, but at least when he has long hair he isn't afraid to wear an alice band and sport different styles. More bold long-haired men in the public eye in all fields are needed!
