Do the same principles apply for growing out your goatee as they do for growing out your hair? As in not cutting it at all? Or should you trim it? Thanks.

It depends on what type of goatee you are wishing to grow and how long you want it. If you are going for an extremely long one like that you could braid and stuff, then I certainly wouldn't trim it at all. Beards usually grow at about the same rate as your hair, maybe a little less actually. So you could potentially get about six inches or so per year. Now, depending on how long you are going with it, and depending on the maximum potential length that you are able to grow beardwise, you may want to trim the ends to avoid a scraggly and sparse looking appearance toward the ends, kind of like the debate between those who like longer hair with a blunt cut end versus natural ends.
As far as the thickness of the growth, then as well, trimming certainly would have no effect on that either.
If you are going for the 'pro-baseball player' type goatee, then of course that is something that you will need to keep trimmed about once a month or so with a beard trimmer. You can get those at a very reasonable price with different length blade guards to keep the length you like.
There is the beard growth awkward stage too. It will really itch about a month or so into growing, if you are starting with being totally shaven. It will pass as you get used to the feeling of it on your face.
Beard hair is practically indestructible in comparison to your scalp hair, but using a little conditioner on it helps as well with combing it and softness and so on.
How long are you planning to grow the goatee?
Very informative post, thanks. Sorry for not being a little more specific. I'm going for a pretty long goatee (Check Wayne Static from Static-X. Possibly not quite as long, but close). I would say his goatee is around 10" to 12". Once I get to about 5" to 6", I should be able to tie it up.
It is probably already about an 1" to an 1 1/2" long, maybe longer. Yeah, it is starting to get scraggly. It does seem to help when I comb it too. I will definately start to use a little bit of conditioner on it too, good call. Thanks again.

I trim it if some part is obviously longer than the rest...
Other than that, just leave it alone.
I don't take that many precautions with it. If you compare a hair from my head with one of my beard hairs, the beard hair is like five times thicker.

it depends on what kind/how long of a goatee
you want.I am just letting mine get as long as it will grow
Facial hair is much coarser and thicker than head hair and far more forgiving. I've been growing my goatee out for a few months now (it's about 2" long), and all I do is apply some conditioner occasionally and trim the ends so it doesn't look sloppy.
