I couldn't stand it any longer. I made an appointment for this afternoon and I'm not the least bit sorry.
I got dreads.
I know, I know - they put stress on your hair, etc. etc. - but I've made it through 15 months without touching (ie cutting, styling) my hair - just washing and keeping it tied back as much as possible, and darn it, I really like it. They're not "official" dreads - they're more just twisted and ratted, and can easily be taken out in a week or two, but I'm really liking them. I don't look as dumb as I thought I would (for a 47 year old white grad student in the midwest.)
Here (hopefully) are some photos:
Wow I admire your guts about you wearing Dread locks but if its what you really like please dont cut them there kind of cool and they do look good on you !

Each to his own BUT I hope that they can be unravelled because the alternative if they do not work out is.....the razor
I'm personally not a fan of dreads, but it does have a certain charm on you.
I still like clean straight hair better, but you should definently keep growing.
I managed to de-dread my hair a while ago. They'd been in since i before i went to uni and i dont want to say how long ago that was... it took a week, shedloads of conditioner and more than a few combs!
i cut about 6 inches off the bottom (the knottiest bit), and combed the rest out. i'd been letting the top grow out for about 6 months so it was loose already. my hair was pretty shaggy and messy afterwards, so i had to cut some more off - about 18inches total i think.
That was a couple of months ago, my hair's looking pretty good - it's around mid-back now. I'm just waiting for the right time to put my dreads back :)

You know you'll get flamed around here for dreads. :)
Check this place out - you might like it.
KnottylocksI'm sorry my friend bur what makes you say that, people are quite positive here.

I will be the first to agree with that Statement to John B
And I will be the 2nd!

They look cool, especially the back shot. Not bad at all, length wise, for 15 months growth.
May i ask why you decided to get temporary dreadlocks?
Are you frustrated with your hair and want a different style?
Do you plan on keeping them and letting them become permanent?
I can imagine that it must be significantly damaging to your hair, even more so than straightening, blowdrying etc.
It's going to be lots of fun to undread them, lol. You are going to need a copius amount of good conditioner, a wide-toothed comb, and your fingers.
Congratulations!
You seem happy and that's what really counts.
Good Luck!

I have no intention of cutting my hair off. That's why I'm starting with "temporary" dreads. They're more loosely formed, and with a good amount of conditioner and patience will come out fine if, in a couple of weeks, I'm tired of them or just don't want to keep them. We'll see how that goes.
And yeah, I've seen some people throw shade at dreads wearers here but 99% of everyone is cool, or I wouldn't have posted in the first place. And yeah, I'm happier with my hair than I've been all year just trying to keep it tied back in a ponytail. I never really liked that, and it looked like crap loose. Now it looks like something.
Also, I want to send a couple of shout outs - one to Sorted, who inspired me to just stop screwing with my hair and do absolutely NOTHING to it for the last 15 months. It's been a pretty amazing journey, and it's not over.
The other goes to That Ball Guy, who, along with Adam Duritz, has sort of been my dreads inspiration.
Thanks for the comments, and I'll let everyone know my hair status in a week or so, when I've lived with this style for a while. :)
(I'll also try to get a better photo where I don't look so freakin' pissed off.) :)

nice dreads!
I like 'em, and they suit you fairly well. You look a bit like the lead singer of In Flames now.
Keep in mind that it'll take a LOT of conditioner to take your dreads out if you don't like them, once the oil from your hair starts sticking the hairs together. A couple of my hairs had (and some still are) dreaded together and were practically glued to each other by solidified chunks of hair oil. So be careful about this.
Keep up the growing!
I think if there were any inspiration for me to dread my hair, it'd be these pictures
........and I can hardly blame you. Those Dreads look fantastic!!!!!!!
Guess I am not a "Longhair Purist." I like many different variations of Long Hair.
One nice thing about Dreads done well is that the Awkward Stage doesn't even have to be put up with.
I can well see why you are not in the least bit sorry.
Wow. I thought it was going to look very unusual, but it's actually really nice! Very unique.
That's pretty badass, man.
Looks cool!
Well, I like the dreadlocks, and am glad you do to. After all, it is your hair and all those who would be naysayers, well, you know where to tell them to go! I am happy that you are happy with the results. Like others said, if you were to decide to take them out later, just use all the patience you can muster and lots of conditioner to do that task and you should not have much of a result at all from it.
Good luck, Bragi
WOOT! Congratulations my friend, and welcome! Dreadlocks are a different experience than "normal" long hair. . .they have a life of their own and it's a unique evolution to see them develop over time.
The photos look great. . .dreadlocks really suit you (but maybe I'm biased. . .)
Are you going to continue to get them "maintained" to try and keep the perfect round look, or let them kind of go on their own from here? Personally, I think you could pull off the organic look very well by just letting them do their own thing.
Anyways, congratulations, and welcome! If you have any questions about locks, let me know. . .I don't know everything, but I know a bit at least.
Be well,
That "Ball" Guy
